The B.R. Ryall YMCA, located in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, was founded in 1919 and has served the communities of Glen Ellyn, Wheaton, Glendale Heights, Winfield, Warrenville, West Chicago and Carol Stream for 99 years. It serves over 6,500 members and program participants annually. The B.R. Ryall YMCA employs 175 full- and part-time staff and is a 501(c)3 charitable organization.
The B.R. Ryall YMCA is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors currently consisting of 12 members and three standing committees including Executive, Finance, Audit and Investment, Board and Volunteer Development Committees. The Y’s structure includes a set of strategic committees including Expanding our Reach, Healthy Living, and Scholarship Committees.
The B.R. Ryall YMCA’s annual budget is in excess of $4.5 Million.
The B.R. Ryall YMCA Board of Directors is in the process of recruiting and interviewing candidates for the key role of Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
The CEO reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible for the total management of the B.R. Ryall YMCA. Direct reports to the CEO are the Vice President of Strategy & Communication, Senior Director of Youth Development, Director of Finance, Director of Organizational Engagement and Community Healthy, Director of Healthy Living and Sports Programming, Director of Aquatics, Director of Facilities, and Head Swim Team Coach. The CEO also has direct supervision over HR, resource development and mobilization of volunteers.
The CEO will provide inspiration as a strong, charismatic and effective servant leader to all constituencies associated with the Y. As approved by the Board of Directors, he/she will provide the execution and implementation of short and long range plans and policies to meet the agreed upon objectives. In this capacity, he/she will manage all aspects of the organization including financial development and control, community engagement, programming, membership/guest services, marketing, facilities, budgeting, staff development and collaboration with other organizations. He/She will be intimately involved with the mission, members, donors and community partners and strategic planning of the Y.
The successful candidate will be aware and responsive to the changing community needs and requirements. It is essential that the CEO maintain the established positive reputation/brand identity of the B.R. Ryall YMCA in the community and provide a vision to achieve the desired outcomes that provide for the highest quality member experience and long-term sustainability.
- Be the face of the organization to the community, other stakeholders and membership categories including families, seniors and scholarship participants.
- Drive the vision/mission and promote the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
- Develop a plan to ensure the long-term sustainability and growth of the organization.
- Maintain and improve operating performance.
- Carry out the strategic plan and develop annual operating goals.
- Ensure sound fiscal management including annual budgeting and related statistics and reports.
- Retain and hire, as necessary, strong, talented staff to carry out the strategic plan.Maintain a culture of team work, trust and camaraderie among key leadership staff.
- Maintain and strengthen an environment of giving time, talent and financial resources and continue to build culture of philanthropy.
- Work closely with the Board of Directors and staff to inspire and ensure that fundraising initiatives are maintained as a top priority and that organizational goals are properly developed and achieved.
- Create a vision/mission that will ensure long-term sustainability and growth of the organization based upon community needs.
- Oversee the organizational structure and team to achieve the organization’s goals and objectives.
- Bring awareness to the Y’s resources for seniors and expand engagement opportunities for those 62+.
- Minimum of 10 years prior experience in a senior management role with a YMCA or related experience at a comparable organization with direct supervision of multiple levels of staff and employees.
- Strong managerial skills to provide clear career path and professional growth among staff ensuring that they understand their role in the mission/vision of the organization while creating a trusting, transparent work environment.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strategic relationship with community leaders and other public and private organizations and non-profits.
- Experience, success or significant exposure to all aspects of fundraising including capital campaigns, grant writing, annual campaigns, planned giving and special events, etc.
- Strong financial understanding of a not-for-profit entity to ensure fiscal sustainability.
- Strong understanding of the relationship between fundraising, memberships and programming including health and well-being, child care and senior activities.
- Experience developing and managing educational programs; youth education and activities a plus.
- Charismatic leader with the highest level of integrity and honesty.
- Good listener, strategic thinker and team player.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and personal values consistent with the YMCA mission.
- Reasonable ability to commit to a minimum of a 3-5 year engagement with the B.R. Ryall YMCA.
- YMCA Organizational Leader Certification (outside hires will be required to obtain certification within 3 years by attending the CEO Bridge Program).
