The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Barren County Family YMCA ("YMCA”) is hired by and reports directly to the Board of Directors. The next leader must be an active and engaging leader who aligns resources and efforts that address the needs of the community. The new CEO is responsible for advocating the YMCA Vision within the community by engaging and connecting key stakeholders. The CEO must have strong fiscal management experience, experience with facility management and strong leadership skills. Individuals with aquatic programming experience are preferred as the YMCA boasts the community’s only indoor pool. The skills to take initiative, motivate, delegate and lead others successfully are also essential components for the preferred candidate. Organizational goals will be met by ensuring that: the strategic plan is initiated, measurable goals and outcomes are achieved, realistic and ambitious funding goals are met, community outreach and partnerships are established and attainable operational goals are implemented in order to create high impact programs. It is essential the CEO convenes key community leaders, partners, funders, the public, faith based, governmental,and other nonprofits to enhance the work of the Y in the community. Areas of Responsibility: 

Advocacy for the Organization: 

  • Experienced leader with evidence of creating a strong, foundational organizational plan, supported by staff and volunteers, and measured through growth and impact.
  • The ability to serve as the face of the organization through the building of collaborative relationships, inspiring staff team leaders and working as a partner with an active and engaged Board of Directors.
  • The new CEO shall work to deepen a positive performance and collaborative culture and have a track record of charting a visible, higher impact course.
  • Exceptional communicator who enables all to feel their opinions count, able to tailor a message to the audience at hand with equal respect and to generate action, engagement and excitement.
  • Entrepreneurial, resourceful, results-oriented and capable of managing multiple high-profile projects simultaneously.

Operational Effectiveness (including Fundraising, Membership and Program Effectiveness): 

  • Proven leader capable of balancing the priorities related to effective, internal operations and relationship building that leads to significant funding.
  • Experience in improving the financial performance of an organization with documented success is recommended.
  • The new CEO must ensure that operating results established in the annual budget are achieved, the control of operating expenses are within budget, and the accuracy, integrity and timeliness of all financial accounting and reporting are accounted for.
  • Experience with an aquatic facility and other recreational programming is preferred to leverage the organization’s strategic advantages.
  • Within the first 18 months, must be able to create a diversified and financially sound YMCA that strengths the community through collaborative efforts to meet the needs of the families, from youth through seniors.
  • The new CEO will be tasked with finalizing strategies, goals and measurable outcomes for the recently updated Strategic Plan.
  • The critical success factors would include transparency with the community, collaboration and partnerships with civic organizations and a balanced budget that includes new program growth, especially in aquatics, and an increase in fundraising efforts (donors, volunteers, impact measures and effective training of all staff and volunteers).
  • The new leader will also continue to cultivate relationships and partnerships with all current and potentially new donors and will be the key spokesperson for the YMCA, frequently speaking at sponsored events and continually seeking new venues to raise the image, visibility and impact of the YMCA’s work.
Educational Background: 
Accredited 4-year college degree.   
Skills/Experience: 

Minimum Criteria for Candidates:

  • Must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills and have personal values that are consistent with the YMCA mission.
  • Minimum five years prior experience in a leadership role with the YMCA or related experience at a comparable organization with direct supervision of multiple levels of staff and employees.
  • Must have the ability to develop and strengthen community relationships.
  • Must have the ability to develop new programs and to review and enhance programs being offered or considered for both economy and effectiveness in broadening our engagement with the communities in which we serve.

Preferred Criteria for Candidates:

  • YMCA Organizational Leader Certification (or obtain within 3 years of employment).
  • Fiscally sound business management approach.
  • Strategic planning and fundraising experience including annual campaigns and the securing of grants.
  • A proven track record of budgetary and fiscal management in excess of $500K or more annually with an emphasis on growing an organization.
  • A track record of inspiring and developing volunteer boards.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary is commensurate with experience. Hiring range is $55,000 - $65,000, annualized. Benefits include a simple retirement plan with the Y contributing a 3% match. A vacation plan with up to three weeks of paid vacation and other benefits per personnel policy are included as part of the total compensation package. After 90 days of hire, employee receives 1.5x Annual salary in 100% premium paid Life Insurance and 75% employer paid health, dental and vision insurance with employee paying 25% of premium.
