Under the general direction of the Branch Executive Director and consistent with the Christian mission of the YMCA, the Membership & Wellness Director provides hands-on leadership for the operations and development various programs such as childwatch, membership promotions, group exercise classes, personal training; staff supervision and designs practices, processes, and procedures for strong program and project management.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Develops, implements, and manages operating plans to promote program growth, program impact and safety for the YMCA. Directly supervises the membership and wellness departments. Measures progress against strategic goals and ensures continuous improvement.
- Develops and controls department budgets related to the position so that resources are devoted to top priorities and strategic objectives. Provides oversight daily as to expenditures and revenue collection. Provides variance reports to supervisor monthly to detail budget variations.
- Uses data to analyze financial trends and forecast future financial progress for the organization.
- Recruits, hires, trains, and supervises staff and volunteers in assigned areas. Organizes people and activities for efficiencies and effectiveness. Directly supervises all aspects of the membership and wellness staff teams.
- Reviews and evaluates staff performance. Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
- Ensures high quality programs through innovative program development, demonstrating courageous and intelligent risk taking with awareness of societal, economic, and political issues and their impact on the strategic direction of the organization.
- Manages registrations, rosters, record keeping, etc. Manages collection of revenue through Accounts Receivable staff.
- Assists in the marketing and distribution of member and wellness program information, may organize and schedule program registrations.
- Establishes new activities and expands program within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans.
- Create & develop brand compliant marketing pieces for all programs and distribute to current and potential program participants well in advance to allow proper registration periods.
- Ensure that all programs are properly inserted into operating software correctly and in a timely manner.
- Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations.
- Responsible for paperwork related to payroll, purchasing, budget, program and reports.
- Responds to all member and community inquiries and complaints in timely manner.
- Reach and obtain program goals as set by the Branch Executive Director.
- Leads assigned aspects of the fund-raising campaign.
- Participates in staff meeting and/or related meetings.
- Performs other duties assigned.
Wellness Specific Functions:
- Maintains existing and designs/implements new health and wellness programs based on need and cost.
- Create group exercise calendar and class offerings that are beneficial to members and are in line with current trends and needs of the community, as well as an incentive for potential members to join.
- Ensures proper implementation of wellness and group exercise procedures. Reviews and updates these procedures and communicates changes to staff.
- Schedules and monitors group fitness instructors, personal trainers, and wellness floor staff.
- Maintains accurate records of staff certifications.
- Coordinates and schedules equipment maintenance and repairs.
- Purchases equipment, parts and supplies as required. Coordinates and schedules equipment maintenance and repairs.
- Monitors daily operations to adhere to all YMCA health and safety standards and policies.
- Performs fitness evaluations for members.
- Performs duties of fitness instructor and personal trainer as required.
- Certifications in group exercise and personal training are extremely preferred.
Membership Specific Functions:
- Implements membership strategies that support recruitment of new members and retention of existing members. Creates a member-focused culture and models relationship-building skills in all interactions. Fosters a climate of innovation and resolves problems to ensure member satisfaction.
- Review and process membership and program scholarship applications.
- Promotes program and membership enrollment in interactions with existing and potential members. Coordinates program registration, including logistics to support phone, walk-in and web registration. Coordinates with marketing efforts to maximize enrollments.
- Assists in the marketing and distribution of information, may organize and schedule program registrations.
- Administer all day-to-day functions of the childwatch program. Scheduling, operating, maintenance, staffing and upkeep.
- Ensure that all sign in/out data is properly recorded by childwatch staff and organized.
- Ensure that all marketing materials are properly displayed and distributed to members and potential members.
- Conduct impactful tours of the facility to potential members.
- Keep organized records and tracking methods to evaluate past, present and future membership trends.
- Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with members and participants. Models relationship-building skills in all interactions. Responds to all member and community inquiries and complaints in timely manner.
- Participates in the planning of the annual budget; manages and implements the approved budget for membership and takes appropriate action to correct variances.
- Ensures proper implementation of front desk procedures. Reviews and updates desk procedures and communicates changes to staff. Coordinates with the business office as necessary on financial transactions.
- Organizes membership and wellness events at the YMCA and represents the YMCA at community events to promote the YMCA.
Educational Background:
Bachelor's degree in related field preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills/Experience:
- Personal training and or group exercise certifications preferred.
- Previous supervisory experience in customer service preferred.
- Excellent personal computer skills and experience with standard business software.
- Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.

Compensation/Benefits:
Salary: $34,500.00 - $43,500.00
