The Cosumnes River Preserve is a conservation partnership among several nonprofits and government agencies. The Nature Conservancy has implemented science-based ecological restoration at the Preserve for over 30 years, focusing on enhancing connectivity between the river and its floodplain.” The Vegetation Monitoring Technician works on a crew of three people to perform botanical data collection and land management.
Areas of Responsibility:
- The Vegetation Monitoring Technician conducts vegetation monitoring to species level using scientific nomenclature and performs land management activities.
- They remove exotic species and/or may assist in maintaining tools, equipment, and land.
- The Vegetation Monitoring Technician will maintain preserve records using a database or PC.
- They are expected to be able to quickly memorize the Latin names and identification characters of plants, and to identify plants to species, using Latin names, in the field from memory.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Supervises no staff.
- Makes day to day decisions as delegated by supervisor.
- May work under infrequent supervision.

Skills/Experience:
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 1 – 2 years’ experience working with or knowledge of land management and/or natural systems.
- Ability to recognize plant species to complete preserve management activities.
- Physical endurance to work outdoors, tolerate hot weather (100+ °F), and use hand tools in a safe and efficient manner.
- Ability to follow instructions from colleagues.
- PC familiarity, including experience with Microsoft Office software on a Windows operating system. Experience with Microsoft Access a plus.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- 1 year’s training in science-related field or related experience in land management.
- Experience recognizing plant and animal species.
- Experience operating various types of equipment.
- Experience working in a team environment.
- Must possess a driver’s license valid in California.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT
- May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
- Requires frequent minor physical exertion and/or muscular strain.
- Requires working in rural and isolated settings.
- Requires exposure to ticks/biting insects and potentially poison oak.
Compensation/Benefits:
Salary: $17.50 per hour, 35 hr/wk.
