Fire Technician will assist with prescribed fire at Nachusa Grasslands, a 4,000 acre preserve near Dixon, IL. The fire technician will work together on a crew to implement prescribed fire.  Must be FFT1 qualifications.  Full-time job, short term position. $15.50/hr. Includes nice clean on-site housing (one technician per room), high speed internet available at Headquarters; no pets. 

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Crew member on Nachusa fire team, preferably at line boss level. 
  • Maintain and repair equipment. 
  • Fire break preparations with chainsaw and skid loader and attachments.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

  • May interact with visitors. 
  • Works and interacts with volunteer stewards.
  • Works under close or infrequent supervision.
  • Works in variable weather conditions, at remote locations for long periods of time in isolated settings, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.                
  • Requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain, use of chainsaw and skid loader with its various implements.   
Educational Background: 
High school diploma and 6 months of related experience              
Skills/Experience: 
  • FFT1 NWCG qualification. 
  • Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. First Aid, CPR, herbicide application, and driver’s license).
  • Experienced with chainsaw use, skid loader used for brush clearing.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum FFT1 with prescribed fire experience.
  • Chainsaw safety training, experience.
  • Skid loader and attachment experience. 
  • Course work in ecology or experience with natural areas restoration.
  • Ability to follow instructions from colleagues.
  • Ability to work and live in a team environment.
