Teach For America – South Carolina seeks a Managing Director, Development to lead the fundraising efforts for the South Carolina region. The Managing Director, Development will report directly to the Executive Director, collaborating with senior leadership and board members to build a foundation for our future work. The Managing Director, Development is responsible for developing a diverse and sustainable individual, corporate, and foundation investor base throughout South Carolina, growing our private fundraising to more than $1M annually. S/he will know the philanthropic landscape and leverage the biggest opportunities to raise the funding necessary to sustain our leadership development efforts.

This regional senior leadership position provides an unparalleled opportunity for individuals with annual giving and major gifts fundraising experience and the development acumen to successfully identify, cultivate, secure, and steward high-capacity prospects and donors.  This individual must be able to build strong and sustainable relationships and have the capability to interact with within all levels of the organization and external constituents.   To be successful, s/he must be strategic and able to operationalize complex plans, consistently learning and growing, compelling and inspiring in all communication, big-picture oriented but obsessive about the details, and focused on achieving outcomes and moving the needle towards the regional vision.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Development & Fundraising (60%)

  • Craft, execute and evaluate strategy to achieve the region’s private funding goals annually
  • Analyze past regional performance, current and future regional funding needs, and regional landscape to set ambitious, yet feasible, donation and donor retention goals.
  • Regularly assess and report on team wide progress to goals, identify what is driving and impeding progress, and developing solutions to address gaps and adjust course as necessary.
  • Cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of current and prospective funders including individual givers, corporate giving sources, and foundations
  • Facilitate Executive Director strategic involvement in regional fundraising efforts that best leverages their time and talent
  • Support Regional Advisory Board of Directors involvement in development initiatives
  • Inspire the Executive Director, Regional Advisory Board, and other senior staff to embrace your vision for unique roles in development operation.
  • Contribute toward stewardship efforts of public funding stakeholders, including the General Assembly, State AmeriCorps Commission, and district superintendents.
  • Partner with Executive Director to prepare for and participate in board meetings,  partner with board members on development-specific projects or activities, and communicate with board members as needed
  • Collaborate with the Manager, External Affairs and communication partners to devise, implement, and fine tune development event planning, marketing, and media strategies
  • Work with the Manager, External Affairs to create development tools, i.e. pitch decks, materials, speech talking points, formal presentations, etc. for ED to use in regular meetings and larger scale events.
  • Partner with regional team and third party firm to plan and execute signature events including managing strategy for logistics, fundraising, and communications

Team Leadership: Attract, Develop and Retain a highly effective team (20%)

  • Cultivate, hire and retain an effective team (direct reports slated for FY18 = 1 Manager, Development, could grow over time)
  • Build a functional team culture of trust, collaboration, inclusiveness, innovation in service of our core values, Diversity Statement and the 2020 Vision and Goals of the region.
  • Coach and develop direct reports to ensure value add to their current and future professional goals.

South Carolina Regional Team Responsibilities (20%)

  • All team members meet submission requirements for reimbursements (monthly), timesheets (weekly), and American Express reports (monthly, as needed) to support the organization’s financial standing
  • Participate in regional matriculation efforts by owning a portfolio of 2-5 matriculants across 4-5 matriculation windows.
  • Participate in and complete Staff Meeting pre-work and attending monthly regional meetings
  • Support and participate in regional events
  • Drives own professional development with support from manager and others to include mandatory PD requirements of the region (ie: Racial Equity Institute trainings)
  • Engages in community opportunities that have personal meaning/connection
  • Understand and effectively communicate Teach For America-South Carolina’s programmatic initiatives, goals, and impact externally and internally.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree required
Skills/Experience: 

Prior Experience

  • 5-8 years of related professional work experience
  • Demonstrated results in meeting ambitious fundraising goals in the past roles

  • Uncommon level of personal responsibility with exceptional goal orientation and a proven track record of success in fundraising or major gift development
  • Critical thinker who enjoys spending significant time solving problems and developing opportunities in order to achieve the most meaningful outcomes
  • Demonstrated ability to both motivate and manage superiors and peers to achieve ambitious, measurable results
  • Keen understanding of the beliefs, contexts and motivations of others
  • Strong verbal and written communicator: can speak compellingly about our organization, mission, and goals and has a mature presence
  • Dedication and commitment to educational equity in the South Carolina region
  • Knowledge of Salesforce (preferred), Excel, and PowerPoint required

Work Demands

  • Willingness to work some nights and weekends
  • Must have valid driver’s license and vehicle
  • Willingness to drive up to 3 hours to meetings with donors on a semi-regular basis
  • Ability to travel by car to in-person meetings in various South Carolina cities regularly
  • Must be willing to work from a Teach For America - South Carolina Office in either North Charleston or Florence, SC
