The Membership and Marketing Director will strengthen community and support the branch objectives through leadership of the Membership department and staff. The primary responsibility is to foster membership growth and retention to meet YMCA goals through promotions, engagement, sales and marketing activities and providing outstanding service. The incumbent will help the Y strengthen community and promote positive changes in the areas of Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility.
Membership Marketing, Sales and Retention and Program Development Responsibilities
- Develops, implements and manages a membership marketing, sales, engagement and retention plan that promotes recruitment of new members and retention of existing members, raise the number of new corporate memberships, meet monthly and annual membership targeted income goals, and ensure members receive premier service by adherence to all YMCA membership policies, procedures and best practices.
- Develops, produces and distributes program information necessary to promote YMCA programs, in accordance with the membership and marketing plan.
- Identifies local businesses for potential membership recruitment and, working with the Corporate Wellness Coordinator, helps build relationships with local businesses for the purpose of increasing membership.
- Facilitates relationships between corporate memberships by providing membership support, promotion and retention of those accounts.
- Manages the Cause Driven Leader on Duty (formerly RMOD) program and supervises the part-time CDLOD staff, ensuring that the branch is led well during hours that directors typically are not on site.
- Ensures proper implementation of front desk procedures. Reviews and updates front desk procedures and communicates changes to staff.
- Organizes membership events at the YMCA and represents the YMCA at community events to promote the YMCA.
- Develops expertise in the YMCA brand, including standards on voice, messaging and graphics. Acts as the branch’s brand coach, helping all staff members communicate our cause – strengthening community – by helping them improve their implementation of brand standards. Works with the branch director to create an environment that communicates our cause in a tone that is determined, nurturing, genuine, hopeful and welcoming.
- Develops effective working relationships with service groups, community organizations and companies to foster a positive image of the YMCA and to encourage good public relations.
- Maintains and provides membership-related statistics, sales and retention reports as a tool to reach other goals and as needed for association reporting.
- Conducts monthly staff meetings, takes and keeps minutes of each meeting to document discussions.
- Participates in all branch and Association trainings, meetings, and events. Serves as an active member of the association’s membership quality team.

Staff Development and Supervision
- Develops and implements a comprehensive staff development plan in the areas of responsibility.
- Recruits, hires, trains, supervises, disciplines, develops, schedules and directs staff and volunteers in assigned areas, creating and fostering a staff environment that is positive, professional and member focused, ensuring excellence in member satisfaction at all times.
- Performs all supervisory and administrative duties in assigned area; ensures preparation and submission of all required reports and payroll are processed accurately and submitted on time.
- Reviews and evaluates staff performance, develops strategies to motivate staff to develop competencies that support and achieve association, branch and department goals. Ensures duties, responsibilities and accountabilities of all direct reports are defined and understood. Effectively communicates to staff the standards for performance.
- Ensures high quality programs through innovative program development, evaluations, ongoing training of Staff and ensure all staff maintains their required certifications. Ensures staff complete all required trainings.
Financial Development
- Provide leadership to the Annual Campaign by supporting the branch’s fundraising initiatives with the staff, board, members, and community.
- Leads assigned aspects of the Annual Support Campaign with staff and members.
Fiscal Management
- Supervises membership bookkeeping, ensuring that staff adheres to best practices in fiscal management.
- Develops, implements, manages and controls program budgets in assigned areas. Achieves income and control expenses according to budget to insure high quality programs and standards in all assigned departments. Prepare monthly reports and analysis as required by the Branch Executive Director.
Collaborative Relationships
- Represents and promotes the YMCA in the local community and develops positive working relationships with other organizations, businesses, and governmental entities. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community agencies in service delivery areas.
Volunteer Development
- Assists in the recruitment and development of program volunteers. Ensures volunteers are properly trained and complete the necessary onboarding procedures prior to starting their volunteer work.
Association Duties
- Serves as a vital member of the Y management team and supports the overall objectives of the Y.
- Holds monthly staff meetings, and attends all mandatory management meetings.
- Maintains current certifications and actively pursues training and learning opportunities and certifications relating to or required of the position.
- Serves as Relationship Manager on Duty and first responder on a rotating basis.
- Assures own professional development. Exemplifies core values of the Y - caring, honesty, respect and responsibility - in all aspect of his/her job performance and relationships with others.
- Two to four years of related experience in membership/customer service, marketing and/or sales.
- Two to three years’ experience in staff supervision and leadership.
- Ability to strategize, implement and evaluate all initiatives of new member and corporate member recruitment to meet branch goals and objectives.
- Must be computer proficient using Microsoft office software programs. Must have previous experience with database software programs.
- Ability to think both conceptually and from a task-oriented approach.
- Possess strong organizational planning and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated leadership experience and skills in relationship building, teamwork and community relations.
- Ability to engage members in meaningful dialogues and to connect members to staff and members to each other.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to include verbal, written and online, with the ability to represent the YMCA in a professional manner at all times.
- Ability to coach and review the work of the membership staff and to work with fellow leadership team members to attract and retain members.
