The YMCA of Snohomish County Board of Trustees seeks a successful visionary leader who will build upon strong executive leadership, promote the mission and continue a culture of excellence within the organization. The CEO will be visible in the community and active in the development of meaningful community partnerships to position the Y to be viewed as a strong, charitable partner.

Qualified candidates must possess a strong sense of business acumen, community outreach experience, strategic planning and leadership skills. The ability to take initiative, motivate, delegate and lead others successfully are also essential components. Qualified candidates must demonstrate strong skills in developing an effective and energetic staff team. They must possess: a proven track record with implementing and promoting services to the community; assessing community needs and developing programs in partnership with others to meet those needs; raising funds through annual and capital campaigns; developing staff, and working with a Board that focuses on strategic issues.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Maintain Strong Fiscal Management: The CEO will be expected to use a highly developed set of skills of financial analysis to forecast in current and subsequent years’ financial trends, growth, and stability, while consistently leading the organization to balanced or surplus annual budgets through earned revenue, contributions, and cost containment. The successful candidate will empower and guide staff leaders on the successful financial operation of their areas of responsibility, as well as monitor the budget closely and problem-solve to address membership, facility needs, and anticipate financial impact on the organization.
  • Develop and Implement Strategic Plans: The new leader will work effectively with the board of trustees, branch boards, volunteers, and key staff, to develop a strategic roadmap that addresses opportunities and challenges related to delivering on the mission, the community’s support of facilities and programs, with defined organizational strategies. The CEO will lead staff in the development and implementation of goals through an annual operating plan. The CEO will lead volunteers in creating and aligning committees and their respective responsibilities to support the strategies, mission and goals of the association.
  • Improve Operating Performance: The YMCA is seeking someone that has a proven track record in developing an annual operational plan for achieving key YMCA goals and objectives that will support the YMCA facilities. The successful candidate will remain fully informed of all operational issues and have the acquired ability to quickly problem solve and address any issues that might arise as well as forecast future needs. Candidate will be prepared to take advantage of opportunities to enhance membership and program offerings, staff development and reserve funding. The new CEO should be prepared to address the organizations competitive position, debt service level, and to enhance membership and program services with a focus on reaching new communities.
  • Develop and Manage the Staff Team: The YMCA seeks a “servant leader” who can inspire an inclusive culture, positive attitude and build a cohesive team. The new CEO must demonstrate experience in building unity, encouraging voices to be heard, expecting effective teamwork, setting operational goals tied to a strategic plan, holding staff accountable, and foster individual staff development. The CEO will lead by example, remain actively engaged in staff inclusion and diversity efforts, and performance leading to superior results in programs, member satisfaction and community engagement. The CEO will have a demonstrated track record in staff development planning and efforts that focus on retention and address the leadership team transition that will take place over the next year.
  • Lead through Positive Culture: Continue to strengthen a culture of inclusion, diversity, integrity, character and life-long learning within the YMCA organization that reinforces, encourages, and promotes values of honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.
  • Advocate the YMCA Vision Within the Community: Serve as ambassador for the mission, goals, and values of the YMCA. Lead efforts with increasing membership and delivering high-quality programs to the community. Actively interact and communicate with the communities in the region as a representative of the YMCA. Represent the YMCA’s mission to community leaders, donors, staff and volunteers. Assure existing strong partnerships are fostered, and new partnerships are created. Be seen and respected as a leader within the community, while proactively creating collaborations to enhance outreach and program initiatives.
  • Advance a Culture of Philanthropy:The YMCA is seeking an individual who will lead fundraising efforts by working with the Board and staff to establish a plan for the organization to raise significant contributions, including endowment, for service growth, affordable programs and capital development projects. The CEO should position the Y to be recognized as the charity of choice by instilling confidence, credibility, and trust in the Y with community leaders and donors. Fundraising plans will meet current and future needs of the organization while building a culture of philanthropy among the Board and staff.
  • Maintaining an Effective and Diverse Volunteer Board: Work with the board to maintain a "best-practices" process to recruit, train, develop, and renew the volunteers on the board. Guide the organization to research each key initiative, build agreement, enlist support from each critical constituency and establish a timeline for completing each aspect of the planning process. Periodically apprise the board regarding the work of the leadership team to establish and execute implementation plans for each major strategic initiative, and capital planning to address existing facilities. In partnership with the board, the CEO will develop a volunteer base to support fundraising, marketing and board recruitment and strengthen relationships with branch boards. In support of the Y’s commitment to equity and inclusion, the CEO work with the board to ensure community constituents are represented across the board, staff and in our program and membership base.
Educational Background: 
Accredited 4-year college degree.
Skills/Experience: 
  • YMCA Organizational Leader Certification. If the candidate does not possess this, he/she must obtain it within 3 years from the date of hire.
  • Minimum five years prior experience in a senior management role with a YMCA or related experience at a comparable organization with direct supervision of multiple levels of staff and employees.
  • Must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills and personal values consistent with the YMCA mission.
  • Must have the ability to develop and strengthen community relationships.
  • Strategic planning and fundraising experience including annual and capital campaigns and securing of grants.

Preferred Qualifications for Candidates:

  • Related Graduate Degree.
  • Fiscally sound business management approach. A proven track record of sound budgetary and fiscal management of more than $10,000,000 annually.
  • 10 years of prior experience a senior management role with a YMCA or related experience at a comparable organization with direct supervision of multiple levels of staff and employees.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Hiring Range: $207,376 - $311,064 commensurate with experience.

Residency Expectation:Maintains CEO’s principal residence within the YMCA of Snohomish County’s service area is a requirement.

Benefits: The YMCA participates in the Y Retirement Program at a 12% rate, with the YMCA contributing 12%. Vacation plan, health plan, relocation reimbursement, and other benefits provided.
