Under the direction of the Branch Executive Director, the Aquatics Director is responsible for the management and operation of the YMCA’s aquatics programs; lifeguard schedules, certifications, YMCA swim lessons, private lessons, water exercise, etc. The Aquatics Director prepares and ensures attainment of program objectives as part of the annual Operations Plan. The incumbent is responsible for the development and oversight of the budget. They will recruit, train, and develop aquatics staff and are responsible for coaching staff. S/he ensures proper care and use of assets, that the pool is maintained, records are accurate, quality checks are conducted regularly, and all class schedules are comprehensive enough to serve the majority of the membership. The Aquatics Director successfully promotes and markets programs, special initiatives and events. They also follow and enforce safety standards and other policies and procedures. S/he participates as member of the Leadership Team. This is a “non-traditional” work week position and must also be available to work weekends, early mornings, and evenings as needed. S/he performs other duties as assigned.
- Recruits, hires, trains, develops, schedules and directs personnel and volunteers as needed. Reviews and evaluates staff performance. Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals. Ensures records of staff certifications are current and complete.
- Monitors daily pool operations to adhere to all state, local and YMCA health and safety regulations. Maintain the cleanliness of the pool deck. Working closely with the Sr. Facility Director to maintain the filtration/chemical systems for the pool and splash pad.
- Creates and schedules lifeguards, swim instructors, water fitness classes, private lessons, and the splash pad.
- Develops and monitors program budget to meet fiscal objectives. Adheres to forecasting requirements and responds to variances.
- Assists in YMCA fund raising activities and special events. Encourages department staff to do the same.
- Models relationship-building skills in all interactions. Responds to all member and community inquiries and complaints in timely manner.
- Maintain appropriate inventory of equipment and supplies for aquatic programs and activities, including all first aid and AED/O2 supplies for the branch.
- Execute and enforce all safety regulations, policies and procedures, including those for the prevention of child abuse. Respond quickly and effectively to accidents and incidents in the pool and throughout the facility. Accurately prepare and submit accident/incident reports and workman’s compensation claims in a timely manner.
- Works with the Rental Coordinator on facilitating all rentals; ensuring the rental experience in the pool area is exceptional while adhering to YMCA policies and procedures.
- This position requires front-line hours, including but not limited to, guarding, instructing, and pool maintenance.
- Work closely with the membership department and engage with the Marketing Director to promote aquatic programs through appropriate media avenues, brochures, fliers, new member tours, etc. Assists in the marketing and distribution of program information while adhering to graphic standards.
- Attends branch staff meeting, aquatic cabinet meetings, program cabinet meetings and other meeting as directed by the branch director.
- Participate as Manager on Duty per branch schedule.
- Positively represent the YMCA and maintain relationships with professional and community organizations/agencies.
- All other duties within the branch and the association as assigned by the Branch Executive Director.
- Must have all necessary YMCA or Red Cross Aquatic Certifications or be willing to obtain these certifications. Including but not limited to: Bloodborne Pathogens, Child Abuse Prevention, Lifeguard and Professional Rescuer/CPR/FIRST AID/AED/O2, YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor and Trainer, LGI, YMCA Aquatic Management, Certified Pool Operator, and AEA Aquatic Fitness Professional.
- Must have good interpersonal relationship skills. Demonstrates ability to communicate effectively, articulate and enforce Y policies in a positive manner.
- Must be self-motivated and be able to work as part of a team.
- Understanding of the YMCA Mission and commitment to building a healthy spirit mind and body for all.
- One to two years previous experience supervising staff.
- Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
- Computer proficient. This is position may require a non-traditional work week.
- The incumbent must be available to work weekends, early mornings and evenings.
Salary: $40,000.00 - $45,000.00
