The Willamette Basin Steward oversees and performs in preserve operations including the maintenance, management, development and coordination of stewardship activities. This is a term position ending December 2020.
The Willamette Basin Steward is primarily responsible for the coordination and implementation of stewardship and management activities on Willamette Valley preserves. This includes all aspects of preserve operation, maintenance, planning, monitoring, data management, and ecological restoration, as well as operation of heavy equipment and maintenance of tools & equipment. This person coordinates contracted work teams, volunteers, and community support and engagement activities, and also provides for and monitors public use. The position works closely with Oregon chapter teams and appropriate stakeholders to develop or advance preserve-related strategies and regional conservation efforts.
RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE
- May lead or monitor work groups consisting of contractors, interns, and volunteers.
- Financial responsibility may include working within/managing a budget to complete projects.
- Coordinates multiple projects with several variables, setting realistic deadlines and managing timeframes.
- Fulfills legal and reporting obligations for TNC-owned fee lands and conservation easements.
- Prepares preserves for prescribed fire activities, participates in TNC and partner prescribed fires and maintains Wildland Firefighter certification.
- Networks with diverse groups, including land owners, conservation partners, government officials, donors, board members, communities of difference and the general public to increase awareness of and collaborate on conservation and the Conservancy’s work.
- Works under minimal and distant supervision; must make independent decisions based on experience and judgments.
- May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
- Experience in identifying plant species, both native and non-native
- Training/education in ecological land management principles and current trends.
- Experience with coordinating/organizing work crews, interns, volunteers, or other staff.
- Must have a valid driver's license.
- Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required during onboarding period. (Including First Aid, CPR, Agriculture Pesticide Applicator license and FFT2 qualification).
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Cross cultural and/or multilingual skills appreciated
- 1-2 years related experience in custodial and ecological land management or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- FFT2 qualified or ability to pass fire training courses and physical fitness test to gain qualification within 3 months of hire. See http://www.tncfiremanual.org/firefighter.htm
- Experience operating various types of equipment and machinery, or ability to learn
- Ability to complete tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
- Experience working both independently and as part of a team.
- Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Web browsers).
- Experience with GPS and GIS software and collecting field GPS data.
- Communicating clearly via written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
- This is a full-time, 35 hours per week term position ending December 2020.
- Preferred hiring range is $21.58-22.93 per hour.
