The Conservation Project Manager will lead Appleton-Whittell Research Ranch's (AWRR) work focused on the conservation and study of native grassland ecosystems.   This is an exempt position and may require long hours.  The Project Manager is required to live on-site in housing provided by Audubon as a condition of employment. The employee is required to keep the residence in good condition, including yard maintenance, cleaning gutters and minor repairs. Utilities (electricity, propane, water) provided by Audubon.  This position is supervised by the Director of AWRR.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Provide ranch security and supervision of researchers and volunteers in concert with other Audubon staff. May sometimes require being on property for 24 consecutive hours.
  • Ensure the biotic/abiotic integrity of AWRR is protected and maintained by developing and implementing a dynamic conservation plan for the sanctuary using Adaptive Management Principles to identify threats and mitigation strategies.
  • Take the lead in developing and implementing programmatic goals for AWRR that focus specifically on regional species of greatest conservation need. 
  • Develop and maintain active partnerships with federal, state, and county agencies, and other NGOs to facilitate project development and communication.
  • Develop and manage annual budget for land stewardship and infrastructure maintenance including but not limited to buildings, fire management, invasive species treatment, monitoring, fencing, waters and roads.

  • Assist other Audubon staff to identify and secure funding.  Assist in development of relations with individual, corporate and foundation donors.
  • Assist other Audubon staff with development, implementation, and administration of grants.
  • Support the education and outreach goals of AWRR by participation in relevant local, regional and national conservation committees and conferences, plus AWRR’s Living Gently on the Land outreach program.
  • Support the science goal of AWRR by participating in appropriate monitoring efforts and by supervising and facilitating research projects approved by AWRR research director.
Educational Background: 
Advanced degree in natural sciences, biology, ecology, or related field. Experience in lieu of education will also be considered.
Skills/Experience: 
  • 3-5 years’ project management experience, specifically overseeing or liaising with decentralized teams and applying the best available science to achieve conservation outcomes. 
  • Demonstrated experience working with public agencies (county, federal and/or state).
  • Proven ability to write and administer grants desirable.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills essential; strong interpersonal skills a must. Ability to synthesize and communicate technical and complex information for a non-technical audience.
  • Ability to work in a remote, isolated environment with a positive attitude and good sense of humor.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications required; experience working with GIS preferred.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally around the state, as well as participate in internal and external training programs as necessary. 
  • Valid driver’s license necessary.
