Under the direction of the Branch Director and consistent with the mission of the YMCA, the Aquatics Director must have a commitment to the YMCA and its core values of: caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. Critical to the success of this position is the ability to provide exceptional leadership and involvement and engagement initiatives to children and families through aquatics programming.
The Aquatics Director will be responsible for the leadership of the Aquatics department and staff in developing the best in-class aquatics programming to include a full range of aquatics classes. The Aquatics Director will follow all Edwardsville YMCA and Illinois State aquatics standards to maintain safety for all aquatics programs in and around the swim area.
- Directs and supervises aquatics program activities to meet the needs of the community and fulfill YMCA objectives. Establishes new program activities and expands program within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations.
- Recruits, hires, trains, develops, schedules and directs aquatics personnel and volunteers as needed for 2 indoor pools and an outdoor pool. Works with the Head Swim Team Coach to provide lifeguards for swim team practices and home meets at the Chuck Fruit Aquatic Center. Reviews and evaluates staff performance. Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals. Ensures records of staff certifications are current and complete.
- Develop, implement, track, and control the department budget, in accordance with Branch and Association budget guidelines to meet fiscal objectives.
- Review program schedules, capacity staffing and revenues to meet the community needs and YMCA mission.
- Conducts lifeguarding, swim instruction, First Aid and CPR trainings.
- Maintain proper health and safety standards, in accordance with Association aquatics safety standards and guidelines.
- Know and understand all YMCA, state and local health and safety requirements, including Pool Safety Plan, Emergency Action Plan, Emergency Evacuation Routes and staff certifications.
- Serve as a role model to promote and demonstrate professional demeanor.
- Maintain all records, in accordance with law for pool maintenance, staff training and certifications, program member attendance and evaluation of participant skills, and DOH requirements.
- Maintain certification level of physical and mental readiness.
- Responsible for recertification before expiration.
- Conduct in-service training as required.
- Actively participate in training sessions, designated meetings and special events.
- Assists in the marketing and distribution of program information, and may organize and schedule program registrations.
- Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations.
- Assists in YMCA fund raising activities and special events.
- Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions. Responds to all member and community inquiries and complaints in timely manner.
- Assists with Program Committee meetings upon request.
- Compiles program statistics. Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of and participation
in program.
- Minimum of three years of commensurate experience in an aquatics supervisory/management position.
- Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
- YMCA or Red Cross Lifeguard certification or equivalent.
- Current CPRO, Emergency Oxygen and First Aid certifications.
- Demonstrate swim strokes, lifeguard rescues and CPRO/FA/EO skills.
- Excellent communications skills.
