The Aquatic Director will develop, organize, and implement safe aquatic programming for members and guests. This position will include coordination of the aquatic schedules and programs (i.e., learn to swim programs, water exercise programs, and safety programs). This position requires face-to-face leadership in these programs and involves early mornings, evenings, and weekend responsibilities.  Furthermore, supervision and direction to departmental staff: lifeguards, swim instructors, water exercise instructors, and departmental volunteers.  The Aquatic Director is also responsible for modeling the YMCA core values: caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. 

Areas of Responsibility: 

Program Development and Promotion

  • Develop, implement, and oversee aquatic programs: learn to swim, water exercise, and safety.
  • Provide leadership to program development, staff development, and financial operations relating to Aquatic responsibilities.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of aquatic programs, so that programs are running at the highest level of safety and instruction. Furthermore, attention is given to meeting Y of the USA standards.
  • Compile program statistics on program participation and retention. 
  • Create and design advertisements, program brochure content and promotional materials on behalf of the Aquatic Department.
  • Direct and coordinate lifeguard/instructor coverage and CPR/First Aid/Lifeguard/AED/Oxygen certification programs.

Staff Supervision and Development

  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, discipline, schedule and direct staff and volunteers in assigned areas; meanwhile creating and fostering an environment that is positive, member focused, and safety oriented.
  • Responsible for ensuring aquatic programs are adequately staffed; including holidays and weekends.
  • Review and evaluate aquatic staff’s ongoing performance and development. Ensure duties, responsibilities, schedules, and accountabilities are clearly communicated and understood by staff members.
  • Create a system of staff in-services to ensure consistency of job performance standards. Ensure lifeguard staff act swiftly and efficiently in the execution of emergency action plans.

Fiscal Management

  • Develop and implement an annual Aquatic Department budget.
  • Oversee monthly revenue and expenses in all areas of the Aquatic Department.

Collaborative Relationships

  • Cooperate and assist other EC Y Senior staff in the administration of special events and activities (i.e. Turkey Trot, Eau Claire Marathon, Fairfax Swimming Invitational).
  • Perform senior staff responsibilities including building tours and building supervision.
  • Provide leadership and support to EC Y fundraising and events and annual giving campaigns.
  • Commitment to community involvement and promotion of water safety and aquatics.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Physical Education or related field required.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Two years previous aquatic management experience preferred.
  • Aquatics certifications (lifeguard, swim instructor, CPR, FA, AED, O2, Lifeguard Instructor) required or must be obtained in reasonable period.
  • Responsible for the quality, cleanliness and performance of all aspects of aquatics within the facility ensuring a welcoming and exceptional experience to members.
  • Passion, enthusiasm, and commitment to the mission and cause of the YMCA
  • Superior supervisory skills and an enthusiastic personality with the ability to inspire and motivate staff, volunteers, members and participants to create a culture of service within our Centers
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community
