Pickering Creek is located on a tidal tributary of the Chesapeake Bay. The Center's 410 acres are a microcosm of Maryland's Eastern Shore. We seek an enthusiastic individual that is willing to inspire others about the natural world and take conservation action.

Pickering Creek Audubon Center seeks three part-time Teacher Naturalists to assist in growing our successful environmental education programs. The Teacher Naturalists will serve as integral to our education team; report to the center’s Education Manager; and work with additional center and state staff. They will maintain positive and friendly working relationships with the general public, volunteers, and local/regional community organizations and school groups. 

This is a part-time position with hours varying seasonally, with 15-25 weekly hours likely during our busiest field seasons, September through November and March through May and 0-15 weekly hours likely December through February and June through August.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Lead field-based environmental education school programs on Pickering Creek’s 410-acre site including hiking, birding, ponding, fishing, seining, planting and leading games for elementary, middle and high school students
  • Teach environmental lessons in local schools, pre-K through 12th grade
  • Prepare and lead public, community and volunteer programs for families, adults and youth
  • Prepare and maintain education program materials
  • Serve as a role model naturalist and environmental steward for students, teachers, community and public audiences
  • Work closely with other staff to plan and implement programs
  • Provide care for program animals including feeding and animal tank maintenance
  • Assist with the care of buildings and grounds
Educational Background: 
Must have or currently be pursuing undergraduate degree in biology, education, environmental education, environmental science or a related field
Skills/Experience: 
  • Must have at least one year of experience working with children and adults in an educational setting
  • Must enjoy working with others and children of all ages in an outdoor setting
  • Demonstrated ability to teach in an active and physical environment
  • Knowledge and commitment to the conservation of birds, other wildlife and habitats
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and communication skills
  • Ability to work as a team member
  • Professional, friendly manner; self-motivated, with the ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Some level of Spanish proficiency a plus
