School Year Environmental Educator

Pickering Creek Audubon Center is located on a tidal tributary of the Chesapeake Bay and its 410 acres are a microcosm of Maryland's Eastern Shore. A school year Environmental Educator is needed to assist in growing our successful environmental education programs. S/he serves as an integral part of our education staff; reports to the center’s Education Manager; and works with additional center and state staff. S/he will maintain positive and friendly working relationships with the general public, volunteers, and local/regional community organizations and school groups. 

This position is from Wednesday, September 5, 2018, through Friday, May 31, 2019. Housing is available, but not required.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Prepare and teach hands-on environmental education school programs on site and in local schools, 1st through 12th grade
  • Develop, prepare and teach public programs for families, adults and youth
  • Assist with special events
  • Prepare and maintain program materials
  • Serve as a role model naturalist and environmental steward
  • Work closely with other staff to plan and implement programs
  • Animal care of program animals and animal tank maintenance
  • Help with maintenance of buildings and grounds
Educational Background: 
Undergraduate degree in biology, education, environmental education, environmental science or related field required
Skills/Experience: 
  • At least one year of experience working with children and adults in an educational setting
  • Must be flexible regarding work schedule
  • Must enjoy working with others and children of all ages in an outdoor setting
  • Demonstrated ability to teach in an active and physical environment
  • Knowledge and commitment to the conservation of birds, other wildlife and habitats
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and communication skills
  • Team-oriented approach to work, and comfort working independently at times
  • Professional, friendly manner; self-motivated, with the ability to work with minimal supervision
