Pickering Creek Audubon Center is located on a tidal tributary of the Chesapeake Bay. The Center's 400 acres are a microcosm of Maryland's Eastern Shore. We seek three enthusiastic individuals who are willing to inspire others about the natural world and take conservation action

Pickering Creek Audubon Center seeks three School Year Educators to assist in our successful environmental education programs. The School Year Educators will serve as integral parts of our education team; report to the center’s Education Manager; and work with additional center and state staff. They will maintain positive and friendly working relationships with the general public, volunteers, and local/regional community organizations and school groups.

The school year position is scheduled for 35 hours per week beginning September 4, 2019 through May 29, 2020 and includes a 6-week winter break from December 9, 2019 through January 21, 2020. On-site housing is available but not required.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Teach hands-on environmental education school programs outdoors and in local schools for students attending pre-K through 12th grade.
  • Prepare and maintain program materials.
  • Collaborate with other staff to plan and lead nature-themed programs for the public and community groups.
  • Serve as a role model naturalist and environmental steward for students, teachers, community and public audiences.
  • Care for program animals including feeding and tank maintenance.
  • Assist with the care of the buildings and grounds.
Educational Background: 
Must have or currently be pursuing undergraduate degree in biology, education, environmental education, environmental science or a related field.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Must have at least one year of experience working with children and adults in an educational setting.
  • Must enjoy working with children of all ages in an outdoor setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach in an active and physical environment.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the conservation of birds, wildlife and habitats.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and communication skills.
  • Ability to work as a team member.
  • Professional, friendly manner; self-motivated, with the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be flexible regarding work schedule.
  • Some level of Spanish proficiency a plus.
