Under the direct supervision of the Aquatics Director, the primary responsibilities of the Associate Aquatics Director will include staff training and development, relationship building with members and program participants, improving the quality of the aquatics programs, program development, administrative duties, creating a safe and comfortable aquatic environment for members and guests and supporting the YMCA mission.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Must support the mission of the Meadowlands Area YMCA and promote the character development values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility.
- Assist Aquatics Director in developing the annual operating objectives for the all pool operations and recommend to Aquatics Director and Chief Operating Officer for approval and effectively implement into overall department plans. Monitors the achievement of these objectives and exercises appropriate action to assure achievement of the objectives.
- Assist Aquatics Director in development of Aquatics programs for the new facility including program scheduling and objectives for the Aquatics Department and to recommend to Aquatics Director.
- Conduct in-service training as required by the YMCA association.
- Assist in developing, tracking and evaluating the department’s budget including program and non-program areas, personnel development and training.
- Assist Aquatics Director to staff all Aquatics Programs. Including recruiting, interviewing, hiring, training, orientation, evaluation, scheduling and supervision of all staff.
- Maintaining up to date staff schedules.
- Supervision of the maintenance of the department’s personnel files at the YMCA.
- Prepares the annual income and expense budget for the Aquatic Department and assigned area responsibility administers the budget and exercises necessary controls to assure operations are carried out in a balanced fiscal position.
- Design and maintain a diverse schedule of revenue generating activities, classes and programs for all members and participants of all abilities and levels.
- Conducts lifeguarding, swim instruction, First Aid and CPR trainings.
- Responsible for ensuring all pool and water safety guidelines are in place and enforced.
- Will provide a combined minimum of 15 weekly hours of swim lesson instruction and deck supervision.
- Assist Aquatics Director in conducting all swim team administrative duties and work with coaches.
- Will actively learn names and engage in relationship building with members, swim team parents and participants on a daily basis.
- Communication between Y membership staff and Aquatics staff
- Approves and submit Payroll twice a month in ADP as directed. Including the accurate payroll hours of all on site staff and supporting schedules.
- Responsible for overseeing pool maintenance, operation: including chemical checks, cleaning, permits, etc. Monitor daily pool operations to adhere to all state, local and YMCA health and safety regulations.
- To develop lessons and/or supervise the recording of lesson plans by on site staff.
- Maintain appropriate inventory of equipment and supplies including first aid supplies for the Association. Order same for all programs.
- Assist Aquatics Director to develop manuals/guidelines for programs and recommend for approval to Aquatics Director and Chief Operating Officer.
- To implement and review aquatics risk management practices.
- Assist establishing and organizing the Aquatic Program Committee.
- Lead the development of a comprehensive Training Program for the association that includes internal and external trainings; as well as trainings for general YMCA staff and aquatics specific staff.
- Direct the Training Program including organization, implementation, administration, documentation promotion, budgeting, registration and evaluation. Will provide training instruction as directed by the Senior Program Director.
- Must provide direction and lead all staff at your department including the coordination and facilitation of regular in-service staff meetings.
- Participate in the Directors/Operations meetings for the Association wide planning process. Consult with Senior Program Director in the planning for the program area, prepares studies that are needed for planning.
- Work in concert with the marketing department to promote and market all aquatics programs including providing the information/content for submitting Press Releases, Ads, Fliers, Brochures, etc.
- Provide information to potential participants, preparing forms, assisting in any licensing or certification processes
- Knowledge and compliance with the New Jersey Uniform Bathers Code including maintaining copies of current certifications of all personnel at each aquatics venue and required documentation of pool operation.
- Establish, coordinate and participate in the on call schedule for the Aquatics Department.
- Serve as a Risk Management Specialist at your centers, including the development and supervision of departmental Emergency Action Plan.
- Must notify Aquatics Director, Property Director and Chief Operating Officer of any unsafe conditions, needed repairs, complaints, accidents, or injuries immediately.
- Assists the Aquatics Director to prepare aquatics budgets with the goal of improving and increasing enrollment.
- Learns and becomes proficient in the DAXKO computer program.
- Runs monthly in-service trainings for lifeguards, keeping good documentation for all trainings.
- Maintains and manages records of lifeguard certifications and runs recertification classes for lifeguard staff as needed.
- Assists Aquatics Director in hiring, training and evaluating instructors and guards; prepares pool schedules and staff schedules; reviews program catalogue and DAXKO every session and makes changes; schedules rooms for programs; and works with Marketing Director on marketing aquatic programs.
- Schedules, supervises and staffs pool parties.
- Participates in Aquatic Safety meetings and Aquatic Network meetings.
- Attends staff meetings as scheduled.
- Participates in all special events for the benefit of the YMCA.
- Obtains required association wide trainings within 60 days of notification.
- Instructs and guards as needed.
- Performs other duties as necessary or assigned.
- Works to ensure access to all community participants through promotion of the Y’s Financial Assistance Program and as a staff team leader in the YMCA annual support campaign.
- All other miscellaneous duties as assigned by supervisor.
- HOURS - Varied Schedule. Must be available for early morning and late evening shifts-Weekday and Weekends.
Educational Background:
Bachelor’s degree preferably in Physical Education (or related field)
Skills/Experience:
- and/or two to three (2-3) years of managerial or supervisory experience in an aquatics environment (or educational institution, business, program, or agency related to children) and two (2) years experience in pool operations is preferred.
- Just be at least 21 years of age.
- Preferred candidates will possess current certifications in YMCA LGI and/or ARC LGI, CPR/AED-PRO, O2 Administration, First Aid and CPO.
- Knowledgeable of principles and techniques of successful aquatic program development, management & implementation.
- Ability to work with and interact with a diverse group of people.
- Must possess strong organization and management skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively and relate to a diverse group of individuals.
- Must possess a working knowledge of safe and proper techniques for all equipment/chemicals used in the pool area.
- Must be mentally alert to potentially dangerous situations in order to assure the safety of all swimmers.
- Physical and mental ability to respond to emergencies and administer CPR and First Aid effectively.
- Physical mobility to properly use aquatic equipment to rescue a 200lb. person; physical ability to see, hear, and communicate clearly.
- Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency.
- Ability to build relationships with community groups in an effort to develop and grow collaborations.
- Hardworking energetic leadership style.
- Proficiency in developing and leading a team of staff and volunteer leaders both programmatically and through philanthropic efforts
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, time management and organizational skills a must
- Sound judgment and problem-solving skills for dealing with daily issues in a variety of situations required.
- Knowledge of budgeting and expense control a plus.
- A working knowledge of computers especially Microsoft Office in a Windows environment.

Required Certifications
