The Executive Director/CEO of the YMCA Alliances of Maine and New Hampshire/Vermont is charged with building the capacity of 27 YMCA associations in ME, NH, and VT using consulting methodology and strategic work to assess Ys’ highest business needs and the delivery of services and support. This position focuses on consulting in board governance, strategic planning, collaborations and networks, capital development, supporting CEO search, new CEO onboarding and other strategic needs as identified by local Y CEOs, Y boards, and the Alliances.

The Executive Director/CEO also supports strategic Alliance functions and provides administrative and fiduciary oversight for the three different states, working in cooperation with Alliance staff, Alliance volunteer leadership, and Alliance committees as appropriate. The individual will be responsible for the development and implementation of a strategic vision that considers and capitalizes upon the YMCA’s brand identity, voice, and cause with the unique ability to coordinate, deliver and execute collaborative initiatives that further strengthen the Y’s cause in youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

A strong candidate will have a proven track record in executive leadership and coordination of autonomous but connected organizations, planning and execution, non-profit board governance and capacity building, and advocacy and ability to influence constituents towards a common theme. The position reports to the chair of the Regional YMCA Collaborative Cohort (RYCC), a standing committee supporting the collaboration of the two Alliances. The position also supervises one additional full-time staff person, the Director of Advocacy and Impact, who is responsible for coordinating statewide and/or regional collaborations of the YMCAs in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont, and advancing the Alliances’ public policy priorities.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Assess each Y’s highest business needs and create and deliver appropriate consulting services, executive coaching, and impact-focused projects to Ys within the YMCA Alliances of ME, NH, and VT
  • Lead, Facilitate, and Support projects - with assistance from YMCA of the USA staff/Service Delivery Partner Ys (when appropriate) - in:
    • Strategic Planning
    • Board Governance, board capacity building, and CVO onboarding
    • Shared Services/Management Agreements/Mergers
    • Networking & Relationship Building
    • CEO Search and Onboarding
    • Capital Development Planning (Readiness & Planning/Pre-funding)
    • Early Intervention for struggling YMCAs (if requested by the local Ys)
    • Connection, Support, and/or Additional Resources as Needed
    • Other areas as defined as needs by local Ys and/or Alliance(s)
  • Provide fiduciary support to the Alliances, with support from the Director of Advocacy and Impact (as appropriate):
    • Coordinate the meetings of the Alliance Boards in conjunction with the Presidents
    • Create and oversee Alliance and cohort budgets
    • Assure expenditures related to each State Alliance’s work are on budget, working in partnership with the treasurers
    • Report to the Boards of Directors at their regular meetings and provide other communication as needed in between meetings
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with Y leaders to develop high levels of access, credibility and trust.
  • Collaborate and encourage a collaborative culture through state alliances, regional networks, and Y-to-Y and community collaborations
  • • Keep current and assure alignment with YMCA Best Practices.
  • • Liaise with Y-USA Government Relations and participate in national advocacy initiatives, as appropriate, as necessary.
  • • Supervise Director of Advocacy and Impact and any other Alliance staff positions, assuring clear lines of communication, responsibility, and accountability
Educational Background: 
Accredited 4-year college degree (required/non-negotiable).
Skills/Experience: 
  • 10 or more years’ experience in YMCA or other nonprofit organizational leadership or management.
  • At least five years consulting in nonprofit environments preferred, with skills or experience in Performance Consulting Methodology (Partner, Assess, Implement, & Measure) or similar consulting methodologies, as well as experience in board governance, strategic planning, and related work.
  • Extensive background developing and delivering strategic processes in core essential functions.
  • Possess a proven ability to establish and maintain collaborative partnerships across a broad range of stakeholders.
  • Outstanding project management skills and the ability to manage complex priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal/written communication and presentation skills.
  • Comfortable generating/modifying all required consulting tools and documents in Microsoft Office, particularly Word and PowerPoint, and comfortable using Microsoft Outlook for email and meeting scheduling.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrates strong leadership competencies as listed below.
  • Must be able to travel a minimum of 50-60%, mostly within ME, NH, and VT; valid driver’s license required.
  • Familiarity with the YMCA Movement and culture preferred.
  • YMCA Organizational Leadership certification required or achieved within three years of employment.

The Executive Director/CEO must display strong verbal and written communication skills and be intentional about establishing meaningful relationships with YMCA CEOs and board volunteers and strongly advocate on their behalf.

The Executive Director/CEO is not expected to perform in all specialized areas below but should provide access to such specialized services through the Alliance and YMCA of the USA:

  • Mission and cost studies
  • Advocacy
  • CEO search
  • Membership and program support
  • Capital development
  • Support and counsel for administrative functions such as HR, Finance, Marketing, Financial Development, Information Technology, etc.

Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $125,000.00 - $155,000.00
