Under direction of the CEO, the Senior Program Director is responsible for assisting in the developing, organizing and implementing high quality YMCA sports and recreational programs and aquatics programming for youth and adults including; pre-school sports, school age sports, sporting leagues, and family recreational opportunities.  This position is also responsible for the daily operation of the aquatics department. This position can and should positively affect the physical, mental, social and emotional development of the YMCA participant. The Director will successfully fulfill his/her job description by meeting or exceeding the program goals and objectives. 

The expectations for this position is that youth and adult sports & recreation programs will experience an overall increase in programs offered, revenue, participants and further program development as well as growing the fitness department.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Lead Branch Aquatics department by providing direction, leadership, support, and efficiencies for team members through strategic planning, administrative standardization, registration, quality standards, and risk management according to the YMCA of Moore County’s Aquatics Standards.
  • Ensures that daily care of members, teens and families is a key priority by showing leadership towards staff and volunteers in accordance with the organization’s policies, mission and applicable laws at the YMCA.
  • Hire, supervise, train and evaluate aquatic staff.
  • Prepare and conduct all in-services, trainings, and meetings.
  • Schedule and supervise lifeguards and swim instructors.  Fill in for absent staff as needed. Help to secure subs as necessary.
  • Perform safety checks weekly and live drills as least 1 per month and other suggested Association Aquatics Audits.
  • Will input and set up swim lesson schedules in computer system in a timely basis to ensure YMCA member’s ability to register as needed.
  • Attend all branch weekly staff meetings.
  • Coordinate the Pool Schedules, equipment monitoring and ordering.
  • Coordinate, communicate and conduct special pool events to YMCA members and staff.
  • Inspect the premises daily for any hazardous conditions and report any findings to the Facilities Director and the CEO.
  • Assist in development and implementation of the Branch Aquatics program communication/marketing plan and strategies.
  • Requires flexible hours to work evenings and weekends.  Must work during majority of scheduled swim lesson times.
  • Accountable to the CEO for execution of policies and procedures of the Association.
  • Accountable for the Budgeting Process and outcomes.
  • Any other responsibilities deemed necessary by the Executive Director.

FITNESS DIRECTOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work closely with the CEO to transform our YMCA to support health seekers and our community in the pursuit of health and well-being.
  • Work towards customer satisfaction by providing exemplary service to members, contributing to high member retention.
  • Develop new wellness programs and services that enhance membership and contribute to the overall healthy well-being of the community.
  • Recruit new members through presentations at health fairs and outreach opportunities.
  • Interprets and communicates the YMCA mission, objectives, and programs to members and program participants.
  • Demonstrate through action and interaction with staff, YMCA members and the public, the Four Character Development Principles of the YMCA; Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
  • Leads small groups and takes responsibility for group dynamics and interactions among members.
  • Be a role model for other staff and represent the YMCA in the community as assigned by the CEO.

ESSENTIAL SPORTS & REC FUNCTIONS

  • Directs, coordinates and supervises sports and recreation program activities to meet YMCA objectives. Assists the Director of Member Engagement with sports and recreation programming within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans.
  • Develops, prepares, and justifies a budget for areas of responsibility. Controls and accounts for the expenditure of funds in accordance with the approved budget. Makes recommendations based on investigation for program fees.
  • Interviews, recruits and trains sports and recreations staff and volunteers. Assists in reviewing, monitoring, motivating and evaluating staff performance
  • Assists with sports program registration, attendance records, and accounts receivable.
  • Secures and schedules athletic fields and facilities. Transports and sets up equipment for games, practices and programs; monitors and purchases necessary sporting equipment as budget permits.
  • Solicits & secures sport team sponsorships from local business owners.
  • Creates teams from paid and financially assisted registrations. Organizes and conducts parent orientation meetings and training and meetings for coaches and or staff.
  • Develops and distributes team practice and game schedules; trains and schedules sports officials; develops and distributes sports rules, guidelines and handbooks.
  • Purchases and distributes team uniforms and awards.
  • Organizes and hosts community events promoting YMCA health and wellness programs.
  • Markets and Distributes sports and recreation program information.
  • Ensures quality control standards and participants' safety.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations.
  • Assists in YMCA fund raising activities and special events.
  • Responds to all member and community inquiries and complaints in timely manner.
  • Assists with Program Committee meetings.
  • Compiles program statistics. Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of and participation in program.
  • Plans and organizes youth lock-ins.
  • Leads program committee.
  • Attends all board and committee meetings as needed.
  • All other duties assigned.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum of 1-3 years experience in program development. administration and management.
  • Demonstrated track record in program growth & development.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Budget management experience.
  • Experience with coordinating volunteers and supervising staff.
  • Typical requirements within 30 days of hire include; CPR and First Aid
  • Completion of YMCA program-specific certifications.
  • Willingness to work weekends and evenings during sport league seasons and to oversee programs.
