The Unmanned Aerial Systems Technician works closely with other staff to develop protocols for mapping, reconnaissance, and other capabilities using small unmanned aerial systems.  The position completes forest restoration data entry using GIS, and conducts field work in support of forest restoration projects.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Unmanned Aerial Systems Technician (UAS Tech) will assist in the development of drone mapping and reconnaissance protocols for a variety of resource management applications within Northeast Minnesota. The position will enter and manage forest restoration data and conduct field work in support of forest restoration projects. The UAS Tech will work with Conservancy staff as well as work closely with agency partners. This position will be supervised by the Forest Manager. This is a full-time, short-term 12-16 week position from June through August of 2019.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • May perform fieldwork.             
  • Operates and maintains small unmanned aerial systems
  • Researches and optimizes mission planning and image processing applications for use in support of forest restoration projects.
  • Enters and manages forest restoration data using ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and a custom GIS web application                                          
  • May work with a small group of staff, interns or volunteers on a project basis.                                           
  • May purchase equipment and supplies as provided for in budget.
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, in hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
Educational Background: 
At least 2 years of progress towards a bachelor’s degree in science related field and some natural resources field experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience with GIS software.
  • Experience flying drones for resource management or remote sensing purposes
  • Experience with mission planning and image processing applications used with drones
  • Ability to acquire an FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current FAA part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate
  • Multi-language skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Field experience related to natural resource management.
  • Strong technology skills related to drone hardware, software, and applications.
  • Ability to synthesize technical workflows into user guides
  • Ability to interpret guidelines and evaluate information and adapt accordingly.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise independent judgment. 
  • Time management skills.
