High Divide Hydrology Crew Leader

The Nature Conservancy’s Hydrology Crew Leader will lead streamflow groundwater monitoring, willow planting, weed mapping and management, and other on-the-ground land stewardship projects in Southwest Montana.

Areas of Responsibility: 

This position offers a unique opportunity to be involved in a collaborative, science-based, applied conservation program, and to gain experience in a wide variety of land and water issues.  The Crew Leader is supervised by the Freshwater Director and works closely with Conservancy staff and other partners to develop and plan projects throughout the field season and over a wide geographic area.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Supervising seasonal staff, interns, and volunteers.
  • Constructing and maintaining temporary electric fence.
  • Herbicide application and integrated weed management.
  • Invasive plant mapping and monitoring. 
  • Community outreach with landowners and agency partners.
  • Field data collection for freshwater, rangeland ecology, and adaptive management programs.
  • Entering data into MS Excel, MS Access, and ArcGIS.
  • Housing is not provided. Applicant must be based in or near Dillon, MT.
  • Ability to spend multiple nights away at field sites.
Educational Background: 
High school diploma or GED and 1 year’s training in science-related field or related experience in land management.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience recognizing plant and animal species.        
  • Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. Lawn mower, chainsaw, UTV, ATV or OHV, two-way radio, or similar equipment). 
  • Experience working in a team environment.   
  • Experience managing staff.                                          
  • Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required (e.g. First Aid, CPR, herbicide or pesticide application).

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • M.S. Degree or progress towards a M.S. Degree in a biological science curriculum. 
  • Strong communication and organizational skills. 
  • Demonstrated leadership capability and experience in training new staff members.
  • Experience in field biology (i.e. self-motivated, irregular hours, plant ID).
  • Familiarity with data collection, management, and analysis.
  • Familiarity with herbicide calibration, application, and safety.
  • Familiarity with GPS and GIS applications.
  • Willingness to work with and learn from people with different backgrounds.
  • Ability to provide for own transportation with mileage reimbursed.
  • Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems of southwest Montana.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work in isolated locations under sometimes adverse outdoor situations.
  • Ability to make decisions under pressure in order to complete project work and goals in a timely manner.
