Under the supervision of VP of Operations - Programs, the Regional Director of Aquatics will provide association-wide leadership for all Aquatics related programs and services for the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit. This position will lead association efforts to provide high-quality aquatics programming for all ages and abilities within the safest possible environment. We are an Ellis and Associates YMCA and the Regional Director of Aquatics is responsible for ensuring that our team of aquatics directors across all nine branches are meeting or exceeding all aquatics safety guidelines. This position also supervises the Director of Detroit Swims, a grant and donor-funded program that teaches water safety skills to disadvantaged and/or underserved communities.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Ensure full compliance with Ellis aquatics safety standards at all branch facilities and aquatic programs. Attend all Ellis audits and complete follow-up as needed. Provide guidance and support to branch Aquatics Directors for monthly in-service trainings and attend at least one in-service per branch per year.
  • Provide leadership and support to branch Aquatics Directors to develop and deliver high-quality aquatics programs for all ages and abilities. Provide ongoing evaluation and guidance to ensure the quality and economic viability of all Aquatics programs and services.
  • Provide leadership for the Detroit Swims program, supervise the Director of Detroit Swims, assist with securing grant and donor funds, ensure that the program operates within the annual budget, ensure compliance for all grant funding and work closely with the Detroit Swims Committee.
  • Provide support and guidance to branch Aquatics Directors, Executive Directors and corporate staff on all aquatics related matters. Assist with interviewing and selecting branch aquatic directors.Act as a resource person to executive directors during aquatic director transition to ensure safety and program quality are maintained.
  • Coordinate annual aquatic competitive analysis and recommend program pricing structure for each branch. Assist with budget oversight for branch aquatics departments.
  • Identify and build relationships with potential partners within metro Detroit that will help with improving and expanding our aquatics programs.
  • Serve as a trainer in the following areas: YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor, YMCA Water Fitness Instructor, Ellis Lifeguard Instructor and CPR and First Aid
  • Work closely with the Risk Management and Human Resources Departments to include appropriate and required safety and risk management education in all Aquatic program trainings
  • Work closely with the Senior Vice President of Properties to facilitate the efficient and safe operation of the pool.
  • Oversee the Aquatic Program Leadership Team and other program-related teams as needed.
  • Develop and prepare program promotions material with Metro marketing team that follows YMCA branding policy.
  • Meet all Association standards and guidelines.
Educational Background:

Skills/Experience: 
  • A minimum of 5 years proven successful experience in Aquatics program development; Aquatics program management; program creativity and innovation
  • The following certifications are required: Ellis Lifeguard Instructor, YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor Trainer, Water Fitness Instructor Trainer, YMCA Lifeguard Instructor, and Certified Pool Operator. If any of these are not possessed, they will be required to be obtained at the first available training.
  • Must be able to demonstrate proven results with leading, supervising and developing a team of staff and volunteers.
  • Must have previous experience and proven results with developing and managing a department budget.
  • Knowledge of aquatics programming from a local, regional and national perspective.
  • Must possess a commitment to the YMCA’s mission and purpose, and knowledge of how it is accomplished through high-quality programming.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $47,500.00 - $52,500.00
