Teach For America – Detroit seeks a Manager, Development to support and enable fundraising efforts in the Detroit region. The Manager, Development will collaborate with the development team to support our current and future work. The Manager, Development is responsible for developing a diverse and sustainable investor base through grant writing, foundation, corporation, individual, and state/federal level engagement. The Manager, Development will report directly to the leader of our development team.
This is an exciting opportunity to play a key part in an innovative fundraising campaign. This individual must be able to build strong and sustainable relationships and have the capability to interact with within all levels of the organization and external constituents. To be successful, this individual must be able to operationalize complex plans, consistently learn and grow, compelling and inspiring in all communication, big-picture oriented but obsessive about the details, and laser-focused on achieving outcomes and moving the needle towards the regional vision.
Development and Fundraising Strategy and Execution (70%)
- Write all regional grants and ensure adherence to all grant and funding requirements
- Design and maintain regional fundraising collateral, including but not limited to producing proposals, reports, and marketing materials
- Oversee all aspects of cultivation and stewardship for a portfolio of current, lapsed, and new individual, corporate, and foundation donors and prospects, with the goal of significantly growing our base of support
- Support the planning and execution of multiple development related events of various scales
- Regularly assess and report on individual progress to goal, identify what is driving and impeding progress, and developing solutions to address gaps and adjust course as necessary
State/Federal Grant Management (20%)
- Ensure Teach For America – Detroit is 100% audit ready and meeting state and national AmeriCorps program requirements at all times, including maintaining all AmeriCorps files (physical and virtual) as well as an updated tracker for contents of every AmeriCorps member file
- Complete all state and federal requirements, including progress reports, grant re-competes or continuations, and submit them by required deadlines
- Manage Teach For America – Detroit’s relationship with our state commission, including serving as the state Program Director and attending all required training and events
- Provide Detroit corps members, alumni, regional staff, and National Teach For America staff with timely, accurate information regarding AmeriCorps as requested or required
Ongoing Regional Responsibilities (10%)
- Participate in and support various regional efforts, including some nights and weekends, to support corps members and alumni development
- Support efforts that impact corps members and alumni across the continuum including but not limited to corps member selection, newsletters, various alumni campaigns, ongoing AmeriCorps data collection and tracking, etc.
- Serve as an “all hands on deck” team member willing to support the region in various ways as needs and opportunities arise, which embodies the spirit of the TFA-Detroit regional team
Prior Experience
- 1-3 years of relevant work experience
- Teach For America experience (staff, corps) highly preferred

- Deep love and commitment to Teach For America-Detroit and the larger education reform efforts happening throughout the community
- Exceptional organizational skills with a keen ability to operationalize the functions of a team
- An uncommon level of personal responsibility, exceptional goal orientation, and a proven track record of success
- Strong communicator: can write and speak clearly and compellingly about our organization, mission, and goals; and has a mature presence
- Knowledge of Salesforce (preferred), Excel, and PowerPoint required
