Teach For America - Detroit seeks an entrepreneurial leader with a passion for educational equity for the new Director, Network Strength role. This position is a key element of our vision for impact in Detroit, as it will harness the power of one of our greatest resources - a committed and experienced alumni base - to continue toward One Day in Detroit and across Michigan.

A successful candidate for this role has an unwavering belief in the power of TFA’s broad and diverse coalition of leaders serving in schools and across the systems that impact the lives of our children. Your energy in this work compels you to design and execute multiple strategies that accelerate the individual and collective impact of our alumni. You build relationships quickly and are able to understand what drives others in this work, so that you may invest them fully in your strategic plans. 

You will be supported and pushed in this work by a diverse and talented team of changemakers. We will contribute to your efforts and ensure your strategic plans continually align to our regional priorities and commitments. 

Your goal is to strengthen the impact of our alumni base, increase participation through multiple engagement strategies, and deepen others’ commitment to this mission.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Accelerate Alumni Individual and Collective Impact (60%)

  • Design, build and manage funds used to accelerate alumni impact, including the teaching excellence fund, social entrepreneurship and innovation fund, and the policy and advocacy fund
  • Build opportunities to identify and connect with alumni who may be strong candidates to receive funding related to the specific impact areas noted above
  • Create and execute the strategy for alumni affinity groups and network gatherings -- groups and events like the Collective, Prism, Policy Council, Alumni Board, One Night For One Day and other related events
  • Craft and deliver communications required to sustain these groups

External Relationships (10%)

  • Alongside the Executive Director, develop and sustain all institutional and community relationships critical to advancing the experience and impact of TFA’s alumni

Corps Member Recruitment and Connectedness (10%)

  • With the Director of Corps Network Strength, develop and execute a plan to engage alumni to strengthen the recruitment and matriculation of a growing number of corps members and master teachers to Michigan, with a focus on increasing the diversity of our network

Resources and Brand Development (10%)

  • With the Director of Institutional Advancement and Manager of Marketing and Communications, secure resources that strengthen the impact of our alumni leaders and increase the visibility of that impact

Ongoing Regional Responsibilities (10%)

  • Participate in and support various regional efforts, including working some nights and weekends, to support corps member and alumni development
  • Support efforts that impact corps members and alumni across the continuum including but not limited to corps member selection, various alumni campaigns, ongoing AmeriCorps data collection and tracking, etc.
  • Serve as an “all hands on deck” team member willing to support the region in various ways as needs and opportunities arise, which embodies the spirit of the TFA-Detroit regional team
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree required
Skills/Experience: 
  • Three to seven years of work experience
  • Teach For America corps member experience required
  • Experience with recruitment, adult learning facilitation or community organizing preferred
  • Strong knowledge of the Detroit education, political and entrepreneurship landscape
  • Exceptional ability to build strong relationships with others, including in challenging situations
  • Ability to tailor approach toward the perspective of others and communicate with clarity with a wide variety of audiences
  • An entrepreneurial spirit
  • Knack for influencing others toward outcomes through sophisticated relationship management
  • Ability to build and execute a project plan
  • Desire to improve and adjust course based on feedback

Work demands

  • Willingness to work occasional early mornings, evenings or weekends (for meetings, alumni engagement events, etc.)
  • Comfortable traveling around Detroit and Michigan for meetings
