The Mountain States Legal Foundation (MSLF) is seeking a Major Gifts Officer (MGO) to join its development team and support its strategic growth initiatives. This position is regular, full-time, exempt, and includes a competitive salary and opportunities for advancement.

The Major Gift Officer will play an essential role in further expanding MSLF’s reach by identifying new and cultivating current major-gift supporters. This individual will independently manage a portfolio of current and prospective donors and be responsible for providing them with a deeper sense of belonging and passion for the mission. The MGO works closely with the Communications and Legal departments in order to inform major donors on active cases and ways in which they can support them.

The MGO must be a positive advocate for the organization and inspire others to support its work. The successful candidate must have a passion for limited and ethical government, the right to own and use property, and the free enterprise system. The ideal candidate will be adept of forming relationships quickly and staying exceptionally organized, as well as embody an achievement-oriented personality.
Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and includes generous health and dental benefits, vacation and sick days, a retirement plan, and opportunities for advancement. This position is based out of Denver, CO, and reports directly to the Director of Development.
Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Collaborate with the fundraising team to develop an annual fundraising plan, set major donor fundraising goals, and execute strategies to reach revenue goals.
- Manage and steward a portfolio of $5K-60K donors and prospects for both gifts and planned giving / endowment gifts.
- Manage relationships with prospective and existing donors in all aspects of the gift cycle which includes identifying major donors and initiating contact; developing appropriate cultivation strategies for them; moving potential donors toward solicitation and closure; making solicitations when appropriate; and maintaining stewardship contacts with donors.
- Deliver regular donor meeting reports and ensure that the database is updated with all donor communications.
- Organize at least two small major donor events annually. This includes selecting and securing a venue, soliciting a hosting board member, staff and/or donor participation, creating the guest list, and organizing food and beverages requirements.
- Produce fundraising materials including but not limited to letters, emails, and proposals.
- Work closely with the Development team on additional fundraising campaigns as needed.
Key Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will possess the following attributes:
- 3+ years in nonprofit operations, with fundraising and face-to-face asks strongly preferred.
- Appreciation and commitment to the mission of Mountain States Legal Foundation.
- Exceptional communication skills, including solid writing capability.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Discipline to keep accurate and updated records. Proficiency in Raiser’s Edge is a plus.
- Ability to prioritize and adjust strategies and tactics quickly in response to new information.
- Entrepreneurial spirit and high energy.
- Ability and willingness to travel 40% time locally with occasional national travel for conferences and meetings.
