Working closely with the Managing Director, Global Communications, the Communications Manager manages and implements communication and visibility plans in support of The Nature Conservancy’s technology/innovation portfolio and supports the communications priorities of the President. The Communications Manager understands the conservation/sustainability landscape and has experience working with c-level executives, brings excellent writing skills, and is an organized, high-energy, creative storyteller who is well-versed in social/digital media.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Communications Manager is a strong writer and expert storyteller. S/he creatively leverages owned and earned print, digital platforms and in-person events to advance the Conservancy’s global conservation and sustainability agenda. S/he will research, write and distribute a wide variety of communications daily, including but not limited to: memos, talking points, op-eds, PowerPoints, news releases, case studies, social media posts, web articles, and blog posts, as directed by communications plans.  S/he has excellent time management skills and works closely with the Managing Director, Global Communications and the President to develop quarterly visibility and outreach plans to reach key audiences. S/he may cultivate external contacts on a national/global level, and works closely with staff across the organization to ensure alignment and to leverage efforts across other organizational channels.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Manages project plans and implements projects.
  • Writes and produces a variety of content, including social media, blogs, talking points, case studies, presentations
  • Responsibility and accountability for meeting assigned project goals and objectives.
  • Serves as lead on assigned communication and/or media initiatives.
  • Resolves issues independently within program area.
  • Opportunity to act independently within program goals.  
  • May work with vendors/other parties to execute projects/deliverables.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in related field and a minimum 5 years’ related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience cultivating and managing client relationships.
  • Experience organizing and coordinating multiple projects.
  • Experience writing, editing and proofreading.

  • Experience setting and implementing social/digital strategies
  • Familiarity with communication technologies and best practices.  
  • Experience working with c-level executives on communications programs
  • Multi-lingual skills appreciated.
  • Multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience preferred.
  • Experience implementing and measuring communication and engagement plans/strategies.
  • Experience developing media relations networks.
  • Knowledge and application of current and evolving trends in conservation, innovation and/or sustainability.
  • Experience leading or managing projects.
