Context: Plans and advocates for Ready for 100 Campaign activities in Colorado

Scope: Under the direction of the Conservation Program Director, be the lead advocate for Sierra Club efforts to support Colorado communities committed to 100% in implementing a just and equitable transition to clean energy and build policy pillars and public support for 100% clean energy statewide.  Collaborates with various internal departments and programs, partner organizations, and volunteer leadership to support strategic coordinated campaign work. When needed, represents the Sierra Club to government officials, the media, business and community leaders, allies and other organizations, and to the public.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Working in collaboration with Colorado Chapter and National Ready for 100 staff, as well as volunteer leadership, partner organizations, and the public, implements the Ready for 100 campaign to move Colorado to 100% clean energy.
  • Develops and advances Ready for 100 local and state energy policy positions in accordance with organizational policy and equity values. Ensures that such policies are accurately advanced by volunteers and organizing, lobbying and legal staff in various decision making forums.
  • Along with Director and other staff, represents the Sierra Club at coalition working group meetings on design of 100% and clean energy policies.
  • Supports staff, volunteers, partners, and businesses in priority implementation areas to promote 100% development. Develops and maintains relationships with policymakers responsible for clean energy development in Colorado.
  • Assists in representing the Sierra Club’s views to legislators, government agencies (state and local), administrative officials, clean energy businesses, news media, and the general public by giving testimony, participating in meetings, public speaking events and by establishing and maintaining personal contacts.
  • Build and support distributed organizing program to engage the Sierra Club volunteer network to work together as a statewide Ready for 100 campaign team.
  • Develops, trains, and implements statewide Ready for 100 listening session series with volunteers, policymakers, and community partners.
  • As directed, supports local teams in committed Ready for 100 cities.
  • Supports and provides professional expertise to staff, volunteers, elected officials and the general public.
  • Assists in content development of educational/informational materials such as newsletters, flyers, and fact sheets.
  • Follows the Jemez Principles for Democratic Organizing and ensures that volunteers assume meaningful roles in the program/campaign.Seeks opportunities to advance the Sierra Club’s diversity initiatives through new partnerships and engagement strategies where appropriate.
  • Handles miscellaneous projects and duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
B.A./B.S. degree in an environmental, political, legal, or related field or equivalent experience and education
Skills/Experience: 
  • At least 3 years of experience as a public policy advocate,  or comparable position which includes substantial experience planning and managing grassroots conservation campaigns, including strategy, grassroots organizing, lobbying, media, working with volunteers, and work with political leaders.
  • Expert knowledge or experience within the renewable energy field, public policy centered in social equity, and city planning processes that integrate social equity considerations.
  • Experience in these aspects of advocacy campaigns is a plus:
    • planning and managing a state or regional level policy advocacy campaign;
    • working with attorneys and utilizing legal advocacy;
    • legislative lobbying;
    • media relations and strategic communications;
    • working with senior level political and business leaders;
    • working with citizens and volunteers to engage them in policy advocacy;
    • experience working with clean energy businesses, organized labor and disadvantaged communities is a plus
  • Excellent demonstrated written and oral communication skills. 
  • Demonstrated public speaking and media presentation ability.
  • Demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with volunteers.
  • Valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, and proof of auto insurance required.
