This is an exceptional opportunity for a committed conservation professional to help build a regional sustainable agriculture conservation movement in the Western Lake Erie Basin. The Agriculture Outreach Specialist coordinates regional, on-the-ground outreach and communications efforts of the Western Lake Erie Basin Agriculture Project, a signature and nationally-recognized Conservancy program, develops new relationships, and implements programs that inform, empower and mobilize key partners to provide sustainably grown food while protecting Lake Erie and its tributaries.
Working under the direct supervision of the Western Lake Erie Basin (WLEB) Agriculture Project Director the Agriculture Outreach Specialist is an integral part of the project team and works with WLEB partners to inform, communicate, and build awareness about both sustainable agriculture practices and watershed protection strategies across the entire WLEB. The ideal candidate will proactively translate goals and strategies into action by working with partners to identify education and outreach opportunities for both productive agriculture and watershed protection. The Agriculture Outreach Specialist develops and implements training, outreach and educational strategies that effectively communicate TNC’s conservation messages and promote community-involvement in agriculture. (S)he is responsible for coordinating meetings, workshops, and events, developing and implementing educational programs and technical trainings, and producing publications and materials to promote and increase public awareness. This may involve serving as a spokesperson for TNC using a variety of media to promote and increase public awareness and participation in sustainable agriculture, management and understanding. (S)he establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with NGO’s, private landowners, schools, universities, state and local agencies, commodity groups, agribusiness and other corporations providing opportunities for active involvement.
The successful candidate will demonstrate exceptional organizational and communication skills and the ability to keep detailed records and possess basic knowledge of agriculture conservation practices including 4R Nutrient Stewardship Certification and the Soil Health Partnership. (S)he is expected to participate in meetings, field events, workshops and other outreach activities as needed necessitating travel and occasional nights away from home.
Specifically, the Agriculture Outreach Specialist will directly or indirectly oversee, at least 2 annual Field Day events, 2 technical workshops, and assist TNC staff with new programs and strategies related to outreach and education. S(he) will ensure that partners are engaged and informed through regular communication and synthesis of information in print, social media and through the WLEB website (http://tnc.org/wleb). Position is full-time. (S)he will collaborate with TNC staff to secure additional funding for related strategies identified in TNC’s WLEB Agriculture Project Conservation Business Plan.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Coordinates projects, manages multiple projects / timelines and sets realistic deadlines; May supervise other staff or volunteers.
- Interprets factual information and communicates it clearly.
- Experience writing and/or editing publications and related materials.
- Public speaking experience.
- Work with vendors/other parties to execute projects/deliverables.
- Ability to operate productively with infrequent direct supervision.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Demonstrated experience with principles of communications and methods of public education for adults/professionals associated with conservation, agriculture or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience translating complex scientific ideas for the public both orally and in writing (e.g. grants, newsletters, social media, presentations).
- Exceptional interpersonal skills and experience communicating with diverse audiences.
