Aullwood Audubon seeks a Large Animal Veterinarian technician to manage the care of a wide variety of animals, mostly large animals, in a public farm setting. S/He will be responsible for maintaining the highest quality care of all farm animals including but not limited to cattle, horses, sheep, goats, donkeys, pigs, chickens, turkeys, ducks and cats.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Maintain safe, secure, healthy and humane environment for all animals.
- Maintain pristine living quarters for all animals.
- Conduct daily animal health inspections and maintain associated records.
- Establish and maintain appropriate feeding, watering and supplement schedules specific to each breed.
- Oversee quarantine of new or sick animals.
- Maintains all animal care and health records including vaccinations, breeding schedules, conditioning, treatments, etc.
- Maintain all registry materials for purebred animals, including performing and recording tattoos.
- Maintain stock of animal care and feed supplies, ordering and inventorying as necessary.
- Perform basic diagnostics such as fecal analysis, care of cuts and wounds, and/or surgery sites.
- Perform hoof trimming for sheep and goats.
- Administer injections and take tissue or blood samples.
- Maintaining birthing kits, supplies and records.
- Communicate information to the public about a wide variety of animals.
- Oversee volunteer and/or intern assistance with care of animals and their facilities and enclosures.
- Participate in weekly management meetings.
- Updates professional knowledge through continuing education, reading professional journals, etc.
- Work with educators to assist in the development of farm-related programming
Educational Background:
Associate’s degree in veterinary technology or animal science from an American Veterinary Medical Association-accredited program required, Bachelor's degree preferred. Must be licensed as a veterinarian technician.
Skills/Experience:
- 2+ years of experience in a veterinary technician role.
- Clinical skills and an understanding of animal behavior, particularly large animal, and healthcare.
- Passion for working with animals in a farm setting.
- Understanding of laws and regulations governing farm and animal care.
- Proven time management skills and ability to complete varied responsibilities in a fast‐paced setting with keen attention to detail, thoroughness and accuracy. Must understand how to prioritize the needs of multiple animals of various types.
- Demonstrated proactive approach to problem-solving with strong decision-making capability.
- Strong collaborative work ethic and ability to work independently.
- Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills; must have the ability to communicate professionally with a variety of individuals.
- Ability to mentor interns, volunteers, and/or part time staff.
- Excellent judgment and a strong concern for safety of interns, volunteers, and the public
- Ability to interact with a wide range of individuals including staff, volunteers and the general public, applying judgment, tact and discretion as situations demand.
- Ability to restrain large animals when necessary, with or without accommodation.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs several times throughout the day and work in an environment that requires continuous bending, stooping, twisting and turning with or without accommodation.
- Must be willing to work outdoors, in varying weather conditions and while maintaining a positive attitude and setting an example for staff and volunteers.
- Must willing to work occasional evenings, early mornings, and weekends as the job demands.
- Must possess a valid drivers’ license.
