As the Senior Supervising Editor/Producer, you will play a key role in designing and driving the editorial vision for the shows, managing a team of talented journalists. You will lead breaking news coverage of events in the U.S. and around the world, and ensure that the shows are at the leading edge of the conversation across a range of issues, assigning hosts, producers and editors as needed. You will lead and inspire a talented team of journalists creating unique and unforgettable stories, not only for the radio but for all of NPR’s platforms. Working with all shifts across the 24-hour show cycle, the Senior Supervising Editor/Producer, alongside the Executive Producer, will develop and implement the overarching vision for news, features and digital content for the shows. You will also manage personnel and budgetary issues related to the program. The ideal candidate for this position combines superlative journalism, extensive experience leading and programming a broadcast news show, with an ability to think creatively about the role of audio storytelling in a rapidly changing digital universe. 

This position will be based in Culver City, CA and works 11 am to 8 pm Pacific time from Sunday thru Thursday.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Design and drive editorial excellence and vision for Morning Edition and Up First.
  • Tracks the ongoing flow of news and drives editorial coverage for Morning Edition; acts as liaison with NPR desks on developing stories.
  • Assists Executive Producer in monitoring the program for editorial and journalistic integrity, continuity and quality of air product.
  • Assists Executive Producer in developing and implementing various program-related objectives and special projects.
  • Supervises regular and temporary program staff by creating and managing work schedules and assignments that, when possible, provide training to further staff development.
  • Provides guidance to staff and monitors and evaluates staff performance.
  • Lead by example; inspire staff to produce consistently compelling, engaging and creative programming.
  • Develop a digital social strategy to drive NPR news strategy. 
  • Establish editorial vision for NPR West host and team  
  • Orchestrate breaking news plans among a team of journalists
  • Lead editorial meetings, encouraging staffers to pitch and execute great story ideas
  • Collaborate with digital news to maximize show content across platforms
  • Participate in budgetary reviews and hiring process for Morning Edition and Up First
  • Conduct outreach and represent the show in public forums
  • Ensure that show staffing, story content, and sources reflect diversity goals of NPR.
  • Establish chain of responsibility to distribute duties and establish accountability for all phases of production.
  • Hire, coach, and develop the talent on best in class competencies and skillsets to meet the goals of the organization.
  • Maintain working knowledge of NPR policies and provisions of applicable collective bargaining agreement. Work with appropriate resources to address personnel and union issues.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience; journalism degree preferred
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum of 8 years’ national broadcast journalism experience, in roles of increasing responsibility.
  • Deep understanding of NPR programming across platforms and commitment to the mission of NPR.
  • 4-6 years of experience supervising editors and producers.
  • 8+ years’ experience as a news reporter, news producer, or news editor
  • Thorough knowledge of news and feature reporting techniques and demonstrated writing ability.
  • Proven skill in both news and feature editing is required
  • Considerable knowledge of current events, including international and domestic news
  • Proven experience working on deadline, in particular a daily deadline
  • Experience maintaining high journalistic standards under deadline pressure, including standards of objectivity, balance and fairness
  • Ability and willingness to work varied shifts, including rotating overnight and/or swing shifts
