The Chief Operating Officer is directly responsible for developing and executing the operational strategies necessary to achieve the mission-focused goals and objectives developed by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and the board. The role of the COO is to ensure the planning, implementation, management and oversight of all Crossroads YMCA branch operations.

The incumbent will ensure an operational budget through sustainable membership and program revenue growth and purposeful expense management. This role drives innovation, fosters collaborations and will position the Y as the catalyst for transforming lives and strengthening communities in Northwest Indiana and the surrounding areas.

The COO is accountable for the success of each of these operating units including membership, program development, volunteer recruitment, staff supervision, community relations, collaborations, budgeting and financial results.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Supervises Branch Executive Directors, and supports facilities directors to assure sound operations and successful ongoing maintenance. Provides leadership and direction to the branches by coaching branch executives. Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions with staff, volunteers, members, and the community.
  • Monitors monthly financial reports to assure that revenue targets are met and expenses are controlled.
  • Participate in the strategic planning process for the association
  • Create, develop and implement operational and training plans to continually improve service to members and community.
  • Participate along with the Facilities Directors to manage the risk management audit and implement the necessary risk management action plan
  • Responsible for Annual Community Campaign efforts (recruiting, exceeding goals, etc.).​
  • Ensures the operational growth of the YMCA through program expansion, member recruitment and retention, pricing strategies, new site development, and collaborations.
  • Identifies potential areas for branch cooperative programming to accomplish YMCA goals, and works with staff groups to develop and implement programs. Fosters a climate of innovation to develop member-focused programs and leads branch staff in the planning, development and implementation of new program initiatives and activities.
  • Provides reports to committees, the Board of Directors and the CEO.
  • Actively supports and assists with Branch board recruitment and engagement including relationship management aspects, recruitment and retention.
  • Represents YMCA on Association-wide initiatives and strategic programming as requested.
  • Manages relationships both internally and externally, supporting branch and organizational goals.
  • Assists the CEO in the planning and formulation of the long range goals of the organization.
  • Develops and directs high quality member recruitment and engagement, which support the Associations’ mission, goals and strategic plan.
  • Partners with the board of directors and community leaders to ensure the Y is identifying and meeting community needs effectively.
  • Evaluates current systems and procedures for operations management addressing deficiencies when necessary and implementing new procedures where needed.
  • Fosters a climate of innovation to develop member-focused programs and leads branch staff in the planning, development and implementation of new program initiatives and activities.
  • Accepts additional assignments as deemed appropriate, within the scope of the job description.

Required Certifications

  • YMCA Multi-Team Leader minimum certification required or Organizational Leader certification preferred (or ability to obtain within 1 year from hire).
  • Must be CPR certified or be able to obtain certification within 30 days from hire.

Educational Background: 
Requires a minimum of a Bachelor s Degree in Management, Business Administration, Non-Profit Management, or related field; Master’s degree preferred.
Skills/Experience: 
  • YMCA Multi-Team Leader minimum certification required or Organizational Leader Certification preferred (or ability to obtain within 2 years from hire).
  • Five or more years of professional experience at the Executive Director level in the YMCA or another nonprofit preferred
  • Knowledge and experience in all aspects of operations, including staff supervision and development, successful membership practices, quality program development and implementation, volunteerism, facility and property management and sound financial practices.
  • Understanding of the nature and purpose of the YMCA and the respective roles of volunteers and staff.
  • Proven success in planning and implementing budgets and fiscal resources of $6M or greater.
  • Ability to relate and communicate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Record of accomplishment of building authentic, constructive relationships with others.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and the ability to quickly learn other software programs.
  • COO must live in the Association’s service area. Relocation assistance is negotiable.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $85,000.00 - $100,000.00
