The director of mentoring recruits volunteers to be mentors and elementary students to be mentees. The position coordinates matches and supervises the individuals by providing guidance. The job requires good communication, interpersonal skills, interviewing skills, self-motivation, organization, creativity, flexibility and administrative abilities.

The director of mentoring is a professional position that works with other management staff and school officials to determine the goals and needs of mentoring program. The job requires the coordinator to interview and train teens and match them with elementary students. They will keep records of the mentoring program progress and report this progress to their direct supervisor, the YMCA CEO and to the YMCA board members.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Identifying individuals who would make good mentors and work with school administration to select mentees.
  • Interview mentor and mentee candidates to find those who possess the qualifications of the program and obtain program specific information from the candidates.
  • Meet with school officials to set days/times that mentors and mentees will be allowed to meet.
  • Pair each mentor with a mentee based on interviews, time availability, and specific needs requested by the school.
  • Obtain parental permission from mentors/mentees and a copy of vehicle insurance and driver’s license of identified mentor group drivers.
  • Provide mentors with guidelines, training, schedule, school pass, driver/rider groups, sexual abuse training and guidance concerning what to expect from the program and with their mentees.
  • Provide all school personal with the schedule for mentoring. The high school must have detailed list for attendance officer and gate attendant.
  • Monitor and evaluate mentor/mentee relationships through verbal communications, such as face-to-face, text or over-the-phone conversations. Indirect communication may include reviewing progress by visual and audio observation or meetings with school personnel.
  • Provide planned interactive activities for the matches to engage in to promote the goals of the program. Supervise all match meetings.
  • Keep attendance records of each visit and report any absences to school administration.
  • Communicate with mentors to provide reminders, instructions and support.
  • Attend weekly YMCA staff meeting and monthly board meeting.
  • Any other tasks requested by supervisor.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s Degree in related field
Skills/Experience: 
  • The incumbent must possess human relations skills that retain a level of credibility and authority with staff and community volunteers, teachers, and school personnel in outreach operations.
  • The incumbent must have skills in planning, training and organization to effectively carry out their area of responsibility. 
  • Must be organized, pro-active, and strategic.
  • Must have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Must have a valid driver license, own transportation, acceptable driving record, and current insurance to travel to schools and other community meetings, and program activities. (Will be reimbursed for mileage as outlined in policies.)
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $23,660.00 - $25,000.00
