The Caribbean Division Director provides strategic leadership for the Caribbean Division by overseeing the development and execution of the Shared Conservation Agenda, fundraising and operational priorities within the geography. 

Areas of Responsibility: 

As the senior executive for the division, s/he provides leadership for the design and implementation of programs and strategic actions, aligned with the organization’s Shared Conservation Agenda for the conservation of biological diversity across the Caribbean, which spans 17 countries and territories.  The director is a dynamic, innovative, high-level strategic thinker, effective and motivating spokesperson, effective fundraiser and collaborative developer of talent. Utilizing their knowledge and experience of the Caribbean region’s natural systems, culture and societal dynamics, s/he ensures that strategies and activities reflect the geography’s strategic approach and priorities as applicable to that area and is ultimately responsible and accountable for the programs, partnerships and conservation results throughout the division. S/he represents the division broadly to TNC executive management, the Board of Directors, major private donors, country governments, bilateral and multilateral agencies and NGO partners. S/he fundraises with public and private donors and ensures that sufficient resources are available to accomplish the division’s objectives.  S/he builds and directs the management team and provides managerial oversight for all administration, ensuring adherence to legal requirements and TNC policies and procedures. 

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

  • Broad management and leadership responsibility involving participation in the formulation and evaluation of policies and/or long-term programs, or making decisions, typically having broad organizational impact.
  • Creates and communicates a compelling vision consistent with the Conservancy’s core values.
  • Recruit, manage, develop and retain high quality, productive staff through the effective use of coaching and feedback.
  • Cultivates the creative ideas of others to identify potential solutions to complex and less-defined problems.
  • Promotes a culture of collaboration, rigor, innovation, respect, and accountability with diversity, equity and inclusion at the center.
  • Overall financial management of the Divisional program, including financial goal setting, analysis and corrective action of public and private funds to ensure financial sustainability.
  • Overall responsibility for ensuring Divisional programs comply with TNC policies and external requirements.
  • Effective facilitation skills and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances midstream in order to manage group processes during presentations or discussions.
  • May negotiate complex, high profile or sensitive agreements and/or commit significant financial resources of TNC.
  • Communicates professionally with a wide variety of people of different cultures for the purpose of developing, negotiating and/or implementing programs and projects.
  • Prepares and presents project proposals and negotiates with bilateral and and/or multilateral agencies to further programs.
  • Identifies, cultivates and solicits major donors in support of program activities.
  • Leverages constructive and effective relationships inside and outside the Conservancy.
  • Willingness to travel 40-50% of time, often to remote locations throughout the entire division.
  • Work requires only minor physical exertion.Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements.
Educational Background: 
Graduate degree in business, law, natural resource management or other relevant field and 5 years senior level experience in international conservation field, or equivalent combination.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience in leading and managing a large multi-disciplinary team, including managing senior level leaders.
  • Experience in evaluating and/or negotiating complex, high profile or sensitive agreements.
  • Experience working within the Caribbean context, including the political, socio-economic, environmental, cultural and livelihood issues.
  • Experience communicating with and presenting to diverse audiences including donors, board members, employees and outside partners.
  • Experience in fundraising, including cultivation of major donors.
  • Experience to engage, motivate, lead, set objectives for a team of professionals.
  • Written and verbal fluency in English.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Written and verbal fluency in Spanish preferred.
  • Flexible and innovative orientation, comfort in risk-taking and appreciation for ambiguity. Ability to challenge conventional thinking, encourage dialogue and offer genuine receptiveness to differing perspectives.
  • Ability to inspire trust and act with integrity, with the track record to build on diversity and complementarity of skills as a leader in the international and multi-­cultural setting.
  • Experience dealing with challenges, identifying important issues and conceiving and implementing strategic initiatives.
  • Superb communication and presentation skills; ability to persuasively convey the mission of TNC and regional programs and priorities to diverse groups, including donors, partners, Board members and others who are critical to the organization’s overall prosperity.
