The Northern NH Seasonal Land Steward is based out of the Conservancy’s North Conway office and is responsible for stewardship support of the Conservancy’s Preserves and conservation interests in the Mt. Washington Valley and Northern Forest project areas.
- Specific duties will, in varying proportion, include: preserve monitoring and follow-up actions, monitoring and maintaining hiking trails (i.e. brushing & drainage structure maintenance), property boundary line maintenance, invasive species monitoring and manual control activities, installation & maintenance of preserve signage, stocking and maintaining kiosks, monitoring conservation easements, supporting prescribed fire at the Ossipee Pine Barrens Preserve and other locations as assigned, assist in leading volunteers, ecological monitoring, equipment maintenance and organization and engaging with the public on our preserves and at our office in a professional, welcoming, and informative manner.
- The Seasonal Land Steward will be responsible for documenting work accomplished and tracking other information using the Conservancy’s database entry system.
- The Seasonal Land Steward will be supervised by the Northern New Hampshire Land Steward. The Seasonal Land Steward will also work collaboratively with the Director of Stewardship and Ecological Management as well as other Conservancy stewardship staff and conservation partners.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Supervises no staff, but may help plan and direct preserve work groups, including staff, interns, or volunteers.
- May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
- Requires long hours in isolated settings, often alone.
- Makes day to day decisions as delegated by supervisor.
- Works under either close or little supervision depending on the nature of particular work tasks and projects. Majority of time the Seasonal Land Steward will work independently in the accomplishment of routine tasks and projects (with the opportunity to coordinate assistance from volunteers as needed).
- Is flexible with work schedule including a willingness to work extended hours on given days and occasional weekend days
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience recognizing plant and animal species.
- Experience and competence in the safe application of a fundamental set of hand powered tools and equipment.
- Experience and competence in the safe use and maintenance of various types of tools & equipment (i.e., assorted hand & electric powered tools, lawn mower, weed wrenches, brush saw, motor vehicles, etc.)
- Experience with GPS units and reading and interpreting maps
- Experience working competently and confidently in the outdoors, preferably in remote locations.
- Experience performing physically demanding hands-on work
- Valid driver’s license. Must be able to operate standard-shift pick-up truck or convey desire to learn.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 1-2 years’ experience in land management and/or related natural resource based disciplines.
- Environmental interest and possess fundamental skills for recognizing or identifying various plant and wildlife species.
- Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems.
- Ability to identify invasive plant species common to New Hampshire and experience with control and monitoring projects.
- Attentive to detail, well-organized, energetic, and self-motivating.
- Ability to be aware and observant as well as objectively assess risks, employ sound judgment and avoid potential hazards.
- Basic carpentry skills as may be needed to maintain Preserve signage, kiosks, and other infrastructure.
- Safe and competent use of chainsaw; most preferred, training in chainsaw safety and maintenance.
- Ability to read and interpret assorted survey, topographic and GIS maps
- Basic firefighter training (S130/S190); preferably red card certified.
- Fundamental ArcGIS skills.
- First Aid and CPR certifications.
