Conshohocken, PA, USA
Full-time

The Pennsylvania State Director is an accomplished executive who'll diversify public and donor support for the organization’s conservation initiatives across Pennsylvania, the Mid-Atlantic/Central Appalachians division, North America and internationally.

Areas of Responsibility:

Reporting to the Division Director (who oversees DC, DE, KY, MD, NJ, PA, TN, VA and WV), the State Director in Pennsylvania will manage all state staff, offices and programs.

There is a close relationship between TNC’s West Virginia board members and funding constituencies centered around Pittsburgh in Western Pennsylvania.  In addition to leading the Pennsylvania staff and board, it is expected that the State Director will develop a cooperative relationship with West Virginia board and staff leaders.  Promulgating a high level of both cooperation with other state programs and accountability with the PA team will be important to the Pennsylvania State Director’s success.

The first job of the State Director is to increase fundraising and drive support for TNC among diverse Pennsylvania constituencies.  Every staff member, scientist, volunteer, partner and board member must be seen by the State Director as integral to building a culture of philanthropy.  Every event, program, land under management and every resource is to be leveraged by the State Director to increase fundraising and public support for TNC.  To achieve maximum leverage and development goals, the State Director and staff of Pennsylvania TNC will all be dedicated to two fundamental tasks:  drive broad private and public support for TNC programs and expand our conservation work to achieve the Conservancy’s ambitious conservation objectives. The overall objective shall be to significantly increase investment in conservation across Pennsylvania, North America, and the globe and to improve support for the organization’s conservation agenda across the state’s diverse communities.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

The State Director will assume day-to-day management of TNC in Pennsylvania, with the intention of expanding the organization’s reach, advocacy and program effectiveness and diversifying public and donor support in the state.  The State Director will lead from a strategic and externally-focused perspective while keeping a finger on the pulse of day-to-day operations, programs, services and activities.

Serving as a spokesperson, advocate, project development lead and fundraiser, the State Director will work with staff, funders, board members and partners to broaden financial and other support for TNC.  An ability to build and maintain a high functioning board and develop productive partnerships with a broad range of constituents will be critical to this person’s success.

TNC is recognized for its leadership in developing efficient, research-based practices. The State Director will build upon this foundation, continually improving the various operational models and practices being applied to conservation efforts for the state.

Collaboration is a key value of TNC in Pennsylvania.  Indeed, the future of the organization depends on the State Director’s ability to form productive alliances with a broad array of constituents and supporters.  It is very important that TNC is recognized as non-partisan and focused on useful partnerships that advance its mission.

The State Director’s immediate priorities are to:

  • Develop a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization that focuses on engaging, cultivating, and soliciting high net worth individuals; define roles for all staff and board members in the fundraising and friend-raising process; identify individual, foundation, business and government donor targets across Pennsylvania; develop a systematic awareness-raising process for each donor cohort; drive solicitations; track progress;
  • Build and maintain a high functioning board that understands its roles and responsibilities and resonates with the mission and vision of TNC; cultivate board members that represent diverse populations and varied geographic constituencies across Pennsylvania; successfully engage board members of high net worth who are passionate about TNC and can help to attract other influencers across Pennsylvania to TNC and its mission and vision;
  • Establish effective working relationships with the Division Director and her staff, and with the Pennsylvania organization’s leaders, staff, and other constituencies; create meaningful relationships with peers at the other state chapters in the division and region and with colleagues at global headquarters; foster and sustain an inclusive culture grounded in the principles of strategically leveraging differences of identity and power,  cooperation, trust, open communication, mutual support, teamwork and integrity; lead and positively motivate and nurture a high functioning professional staff that is representative of the communities and geographies of Pennsylvania, ensuring a collegial and team-oriented working environment with open lines of communications; lead through influence rather than authority;
  • Assume responsibility for the day-to-day management of the activities of TNC in Pennsylvania; understand the breadth of work being conducted; align spending and fundraising to the organization’s priorities; develop and periodically update the organization’s strategic plan for Pennsylvania conservation programs;
  • Review the internal management processes of the organization, including: human resources, financial controlling and accounting systems, legal, budgeting and planning, project management and controls, conservation management processes, and information systems; upgrade, restructure and streamline as appropriate; evolve staff and board teams to optimally advance financial and other support for TNC’s conservation agenda;
  • Secure the trust and confidence of the Division Director and Board of Trustees, keeping both well informed of the activities of TNC; provide timely and concise “state of the organization” assessments.
