The Foundations and Donor Communications Associate is a key member of the development team. They will be responsible for developing funding proposals, producing reports and other donor stewardship materials, managing a small portfolio of foundations/donors, and creating and editing content about The Nature Conservancy’s impact. Working collaboratively across multiple teams and gaining in-depth exposure to our programs, they will help to streamline our writing and reporting processes and ensure we are communicating effectively with key stakeholders while securing important funding for our mission.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Donor Communications Associate works closely with members of the Philanthropy team and colleagues across the organization to translate our conservation vision, strategies, projects, and outcomes into powerful content and stories that win hearts and minds. They will demonstrate a deep understanding of key audiences and play a lead role in synthesizing complex information into language that resonates with institutional funders, individual donors, and other stakeholders. Primary responsibilities include timely and accurate management of foundation grants, generating and executing solicitation and stewardship strategies. They will also assist with content development for other donor materials as needed, and work closely with fundraisers, marketing and conservation staff, and senior leaders to understand donor needs and find compelling stories about our work in order to produce compelling and meaningful materials.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Build and manage external relationships with foundation representatives and donors, as well as internal relationships with Philanthropy team members, Finance Manager, marketing and conservation staff.
  • Write effective grant proposals (8-12 per year), letters of inquiry, acknowledgement letters, annual appeals, progress and stewardship reports, and create and implement tools to solicit and steward our major donors (4-6/year).
  • Manage and implement projects by setting timelines, assigning roles, coordinating with stakeholders, meeting deadlines; and be accountable for achieving project objectives.
  • Ensure compliance with TNC policies and procedures, and external (donor/legal/IRS) requirements.
  • Accomplish goals by gaining cooperation from individuals or groups over whom there is no direct authority.
  • Maintain high degree of confidentiality and responsibility regarding information related to Conservancy business and confidential foundation and donor information.
  • Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements and minor physical exertion and/or strain.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree and 2 years’ experience or equivalent combination.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience building relationships with staff, clients/customers/donors or similar.
  • Experience in business writing, editing, and proofreading.
  • Experience working across teams.
  • Experience, coursework, or other training in principles and practices of relevant field.

DESIRED QULAIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills with attention to detail and strong verbal communication.
  • Experience with grant writing and/or other fundraising writing.
  • Highly organized and experience with project and process management, especially leading or managing multiple projects at a time.
  • Collaborative style combined with the ability and desire to work in a team-based environment.
  • Ability to establish the trust of colleagues and build strong relationships with key faculty/staff.
  • Ability to deliver consistently excellent work product and to work independently without requiring heavy oversight.
  • Active and curious learner with the ability to soak up information, distill important highlights, and apply that knowledge into strategic proposals and creative communications materials.
  • Adept at navigating complex environments with evolving priorities.
  • Enthusiasm for continuous learning and an excitement for professional development opportunities.
  • Experience with database administration and spreadsheet software, including managing and tracking data.
  • Passion for the mission of The Nature Conservancy and conservation.
