Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Senior Aquatics Director will be responsible for providing the strategic development and management of Aquatics in the West Cabarrus YMCA, consistent with the Christian Mission of the YMCA.  Focus areas include, but not limited to, growth and development of aquatics programming including swim lessons (individual and group), swim teams, swim program, year-round swimming pool, water exercise classes, training of lifeguards and aquatics instructional staff, lifeguard management and Safety Around Water (SAW).

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • drowning prevention.
  • Encourage staff professional development and growth along with full authority over disciplinary actions.  
  • Ensure consistency in policies compliance and cooperating with insurance and governing bodies to ensure full safety of members and staff
  • Provide leadership support to the swim directors in the areas of program development, staff training, program quality standards, recertification, audits, and resource development.
  • Responsibility for fundraising and budget allocations.
  • Assume ownership for identifying, nurturing, and managing vendor relationships or partnerships with swim suppliers, Cabarrus County communities, and corporations.
  • Lead projects for the swim program, i.e., developing an adapted swim lesson program, partnering with local universities to implement lifeguarding as a course, develop a new safety audit process, establish a single vendor for pool chemical purchasing and maintenance, etc.
  • Develop and grow swim programs and identify best practices.
  • Lead swim related risk management strategies and audits, emergency procedures, readiness audits and staff orientation/onboarding.
  • Provide support, expertise, and guidance to branch executive and aquatics staff.
  • Assist in the hiring and onboarding process of branch aquatics leadership positions.
  • Ensure YMCA aquatics staff acquire and maintain current certifications in all safety and risk awareness trainings.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with other YMCAs and aquatics programs to position the YMCA as a world class leader in the area of aquatic program development.
  • Collaborate with marketing and communications coordinators to respond to media requests, write articles, and participate in speaking engagement events to promote the YMCA and its aquatic programs.
  • Collaborate with the association Development Director to research and write grants to fund aquatic programs.
  • Research and engage in continuing education to stay current in program trends and development.
Educational Background: 
Have a minimum of a four-year college degree from an accredited college or university. 
Skills/Experience: 
  • Possess minimum 5-7 years professional experience with proven success in leading the administration, management, supervision, program development/planning of an aquatics program department
  • Possess ability to supervise and direct all aquatics-related trainings and to recruit, train, retain, and evaluate part-time aquatics staff and volunteers.
  • Hold current certifications: CPR and AED for the Professional Rescuer, Oxygen Administration, First Aid. 
  • Hold current (or ability to obtain upon hire) YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor certification and YMCA Lifeguard Instructor preferred, Pool Operator (CPO).
  • Possess collaborative skills in creating and sustaining trusting relationships with members, volunteers, staff and community leaders/officials.
  • Possess superior people management skills and conflict resolution skills.
  • Have proven ability to demonstrate initiative, sound judgment and independent decision making.
  • Possess excellent communication and presentation skills (both oral and written).
  • Have demonstrated experience with developing, monitoring, and managing a budget.  
  • Possess ability to be a catalyst for program growth, quality and innovation.
  • Possess proven ability to develop staff skills in the aquatics environment. 
  • Be able to make critical decisions independently. 
  • Possess proven experience developing and implementing short and long-term plans with a high degree of quality and success.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $43,000.00 - $48,000.00
