The Statewide Public Policy Director will work with the Alzheimer’s Association Statewide (the Association) to protect and promote the health, economic and legal security of people with Alzheimer's disease and related disorders, their families, and caregivers by:
- Creating relationships with governmental decision makers and other advocates;
- Protecting and building resources for state funding for services and support;
- Creating awareness of Alzheimer's disease and the services of the Association;
- Collaborating with staff and volunteers of State Chapters on the integration of public policy initiatives with other Chapter programs and services.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Provide staff leadership and support to the Association in the development of specific action steps and related timetables for coordinating the public policy efforts of the Ohio Chapters and devising a unified state platform, and oversee all efforts and activities to achieve the state-level public policy priorities.
- Assist the grassroots advocacy staff in Ohio to help design a strategic plan, specific action steps, and related timetables for utilizing the grassroots network within Ohio on state policy priorities.
- Work with legislators, legislative staff, and representatives of the executive and judicial branches to promote public policy initiatives. Serve as the Association’s chief professional lobbyist and face of the Association in Columbus.
- Monitor committee meetings and legislative action during the state legislative session as well as between sessions.
- Develop relationships and attend meetings of related advocacy groups in Ohio to share ideas, exchange information and concerns, and coordinate advocacy efforts.
- Represent the Association on appropriate state governmental workgroups, taskforces, or committees. Prepare, present, or arrange for testimony on behalf of the Association.
- Beginning in fiscal year 2020, manages the Ohio public policy staff that are responsible for developing local grassroots advocacy efforts across the state.
- Participate in local Chapter public policy meetings as needed.
- Coordinate public policy special events and integration of public policy initiatives with other Association events.
- Ensure Chapter spokespersons are trained to deliver a consistent public policy message on state policy issues.
- Develop a working relationship with the National Public Policy Office staff and volunteers to become familiar with the expertise, information, and support available to develop and implement an effective statewide public policy initiative.
- Assist the Ohio grassroots advocacy staff in coordinating chapter activities for the annual Alzheimer’s Association Ohio Advocacy Memory Day and follow-up, and assist the advocacy staff in establishing a system for sharing of information and ideas garnered among grassroots network.
- Serve as the state clearinghouse for all public policy information for Ohio distributed from Washington, distribute to appropriate individuals, and coordinate responsive activity.
- Assist and collaborate with the Program Directors in Ohio to ensure state legislators, legislative staff, and other state government officials have an understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and are aware of the programs and services the Association provides to meet the needs of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease, their families, and their caregivers.
- Assist and collaborate with Communications Directors in Ohio to coordinate media outreach that promotes the Association’s policy priorities in Ohio, including through press releases and other earned media events.
- Track and report activities to ensure compliance with federal and state lobbying laws.
- All other duties as assigned.
Educational Background:
Undergraduate degree in public policy, government, public administration, law, or equivalent experience.
Skills/Experience:
- Minimum of four years relevant policy or registered lobbyist experience.
- Knowledge of and experience with the legislative and executive branch functions of state government, including the budget process.
- Knowledge of aging and/or health network preferred.
- Background in Alzheimer's disease helpful.
Skills and Expertise
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking.
- Proven ability work independently, think on your feet, and act decisively.
- Strong community organizational skills and ability to work with volunteers.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
Working Conditions
- Job requires operating within deadlines, setting priorities, and the ability to be flexible.
- Some evening and weekend hours required. Additional hours may be required during certain periods of each year.
- Some statewide travel required. Must have reliable transportation.
- Office will be located in Columbus area.
- Job requires interaction with chapter executive directors, chapter grassroots advocacy staff, volunteers, legislators, and other governmental officials, coalition members, health care professionals, and community leaders.
Supervision
- Job requires the ability to work independently.
- The Executive Director of the Central Ohio Chapter will provide day-to-day supervision.
- Executive Directors from each of the chapters in Ohio will participate in an annual performance review process.
- Management experience preferred as position will require supervision of key Association grassroots staff as a revised public policy structure in the state is created
