Context: The Chapter Director, implements policies and programs adopted by the Chapter Executive Committee. Manages the staff budget and operations of the conservation and legislative program, fundraising, and media relations.
Scope: Carries out the policies, priorities and objectives of the Executive Committee. Responsible for managing staff and administering financial resources.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Assists the Executive Committee, and Chapter Committees to develop the Chapter's short and long term strategic, programmatic and financial goals and objectives. Provides timely reports to the Chapter Executive Committee.
- Designs and implements effective legislative programs and initiatives that reflect the chapters goals and priorities, and lobbies and represents the Chapter to elected officials.
- Plans and implements an effective public relations program, develops contacts with the media to establish and maintain positive relations to maximize the chapter's credibility and position of issues.
- Designs and develops information systems to monitor the effectiveness of programs, as well as the status of the budget. Responsible for reporting outcomes to the Chapter Executive Committee.
- Recruits and motivates volunteers and enables their role in the effectiveness of the chapter.
- Assists the Chapter Conservation Chair in the planning and implementation of the core conservation efforts and programs
- Attends and facilitates meetings, task forces, and events. Builds strong relationships with other groups, elected officials, governmental agencies, etc. Represents the Chapter when appropriate.
- Coordinates efforts with the national headquarters staff and ensures that the chapter strategies are in compliance with national requirements.
- Manages staff. Holds regular staff meetings and provides coaching and development for staff. Writes and conducts performance appraisals of direct reports and takes personnel actions, as agreed to by the Personnel Committee. Ensures Chapter is in compliance with Sierra Club’s employment policies and practices.
- Reviews staff time report and ensures the reporting of this information in Workday is accurate and timely in accordance with Sierra Club policies.
- Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Educational Background:
B.A./B.S. degree in Environmental Studies, Political Science or a closely related field.
Skills/Experience:
- At least 5 years experience in management, grassroots organizing, training, and motivating volunteers, coalition building and lobbying.
- At least 3 years experience in administering large c3 and c4 budgets.
- Experienced in implementing and managing diversity, equity, and inclusion policies.
- Strong demonstrated written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated public speaking ability.
- Prior experience as a director, managing and delegating to several managers.
- Prior experience and knowledge of the legislative process.
- Demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with volunteers.
