Director of Risk Management & Aquatics Safety

This new role is responsible for meeting CARF requirements for housing in terms of risk and follow up on all Incident / Accident reports for housing.  Our Director will also assist in our efforts in aquatics safety and ensure the YMCA’s compliance with all local, state, and national YMCA standards.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Lead Aquatics Innovation Team in the area of aquatics safety
  • Staff trainings in risk - CPR / Camp Trainings / NVCI as needed.
  • New building / operation safety policy implementation for aquatics safety
  • Redwoods training site supervision and reporting
  • Work alongside shelter risk director to determine trends and needs for their populations (I.e. Narcan Training)
  • Lead Relationship with the ARC in terms of courses and AP Agreement
  • report out to branches quarterly with basic incident information and trends and then association wide 2x a year. 
  • Lead large association wide Aquatics Safety initiatives and training events.
  • Ensure CARF requirements are met for housing operations
  • Respond, debrief, and communicate emergencies as needed.
  • Develops and maintains functional relationships with community partners that have a focus/impact on community safety and emergency preparedness. 
  • Establishes and maintains all risk management and safety policies and practices to comply with legislation and industry practices. 
  • Responsible for identifying staff trainings that are needed, scheduling trainings, and developing a system to track all training. Ensures that housing staff are sufficiently trained on how to implement the risk management policies and practices in their daily routines. 
  • Work with YMCA leadership to develop and execute Emergency Action Plans (EAP); perform routine safety audits at the facility, and evaluate performance and provide follow up training and documentation on needed improvements.
  • Provide feedback on effectiveness of EAP’s, monitoring standards, and provide leadership as needed in these areas. 
  • Evaluates and updates the housing emergency procedure and plan manual. 
  • Possess a working knowledge of security operations to ensure program standards and safety of residents and staff is met.  
  • Responds to all resident and community inquiries/complaints in a timely manner. 
  • Review facility incident reports and risk management assessments and maintain records of each.
  • Provide leadership and serve as a first responder for any major incident or accident involving on the facility. Facilitate communications throughout investigation of all claims.
  • Utilize knowledge of mental health, substance abuse, and other barriers to assist and understand the resident population.  
  • Collaborates with the management team to ensure safe and responsible operation of the residence facility and actively participating in branch philanthropy efforts, specials events, meetings and training.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Directly supervises 6-10 Safety & Security staff at the 40 W.  Long Street location.  Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the association’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; developing, coaching, rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in recreation, aquatics, social sciences, or a related field, and two years experience working in an aquatics environment; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Passionate belief in the Y’s cause of nurturing the potential of all youth, supporting healthy living for all people and finding ways to help and support our neighbors.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet and database programs.
  • Experience working with a diverse population; experience working with homeless population or high-risk individuals desired. 
  • Ability to make appropriate decisions in stressful situations
  • Proven track record of developing authentic relationships with others.
  • Ability to foster a collaborative team approach to solving challenging situations. 
  • YMCA Team Leader certification; if not certified, must obtain certification within 12 months
    • Team leader certification requires: Principles and Practices; Introduction to Volunteerism; Introduction to Leading Others; Introduction to Fiscal Management; Leadership competency assessment; Team Leader Certification Test.

Training Requirements:

  • Immediately upon hire:  lifeguarding certification (ARC);  American Red Cross First Aid & CPR for Professional Rescuer; AED, O2 and state-mandated concussion training 
  • Within 6 months of hire: YSL, LGI (ARC)
  • Within 1 year of hire:  become YSL Trainer & complete YMCA Aquatic Management (YAM) and POOL. 
  • Within 2 years of hire:  become trainer level in another aquatics area (POOL, YAM, Water Fitness, AOA, Arthritis, Disabilities, Principles of Swimming and Diving, Swim Officials 1 &2)
Compensation/Benefits: 

$47,000.00 - $55,000.00
