Under the Direction of the Branch Director/ CEO, the Association Aquatics Director will develop, organize, and implement high quality, safe and satisfactory Aquatic Programs. This position supports the work of the Y, a leading non-profit committed to strengthening the community through Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility.

Oversees and maintains the successful creation of a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Promote the YMCA’s four core values – Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility in all program activities.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Develops, implements, and manages operating plan to promote program and/or memberships/ programs growth for theYMCA.Executes strategies to ensure that member sand/or program participants connect with one another  and connect with the YMCA.
  • Recruits, Hires, trains, develops, schedules and directs personnel and volunteers as needed. Facilitates communication and provides leadership. Reviews and evaluates staff performance. Models relationship-building skills in all interactions. Ability to fill -in for any shift opening to ensure quality program standards are met.
  • Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff.
  • Knows, understands, and consistently applies and enforces all safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area with a courteous but firm and brief explanation realizing that any distraction could cost a life.
  • Monitors daily pool operations to adhere to all state, local and YMCA Health and Safety Regulations.
  • Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.
  • Manages, controls, and monitors Department and Program Budgets to meet fiscal objectives. Responsible for the overall management of Department Budget and Staff Payroll.
  • Checks the pool for hazardous conditions, and coordinates cleaning and equipment maintenance schedules. Performs Chemical testing checks. And takes appropriate action as needed.
  • Ensures accurate records of water chemical levels, and facility maintenance.
  • Organizes the YMCA Swim Team. Communication with Swim Coach is necessary for Program Success. Serves as the Head Coach for both YMCA Swim Teams. Communication with Dept. Director’s is necessary for Program Success. Youth Barracudas and Masters Barracudas Swim team will function as 2 teams, under 1 association.
  • Directs and supervises swim team activities to meet the needs of the community and fulfill YMCA objectives..
  • Develops strategies to motivate the Swim team and achieve goals Builds effective, authentic relationships with swimmers and parents;help them connect with each other and the YMCA.Encourage parental involvement and identify potential volunteers.
  • Coaches Swim Team in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared Workouts accordingly, and posts for Swimmers and parents to see. Maintains records as required on a regular basis (attendance, times,etc.)
  • Conveys information on swim team programs and schedules and as appropriate, refers students and parents to other Y programs. Communication with Swimmers and Parents is required. (verbal, email, text, social media, handouts, letters, office time,etc.)
  • Creates and schedules Swim Classes, Water Fitness Schedule, and Swim Team Practices and Meets.
  • Conducts lifeguarding, swim instruction, First Aid, O2 and CPR training Certification Courses.
  • OrganizesandschedulesProgramRegistrations.CompilesProgramStatistics.Monitorsandevaluatesthe effectiveness of and participation in Programs
  • Assists in Marketing and distributing of Program Information. Communicates Program Information with Department Staff and all other YMCA Departments. Must attend all YMCA meetings to ensure effective program knowledge and information is communicated.
  • Assists in YMCA fundraising, activities, and Special Events.
  • Promotes Safety Around Water initiatives through Outreach programs.
  • Is knowledgeable on YMCA Childcare/ Aquatics policies and applies Best Practices to Program Guidelines. Must adhere to YMCA protocol on Child Interaction Policy. Will Understand and implement all Praesidium Guidelines as directed by Branch Director/CEO.
  • Exhibits a style of work that includes a positive attitude,cooperation,patience,flexibility,self-motivation,and professionalism.
  • Responsible for the overall appearance of Pool Areas.
  • Responds to all member and community inquiries and complaints in a timely manner.
  • Responsible for gathering all information related to Aquatics environment emergencies.
  • Responsible for the intake of any money,in the form of donations,program revenue,or Swim dues and deposits accordingly.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in human services, recreation, business, or a related field or experience equivalent, preferred.
Skills/Experience: 
  • MUST be up-to-date on all Instructor Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen, lifeguarding, and Swim Lesson Instructor.
  • Five or more years of management experience, preferably in a YMCA or other nonprofit agency.
  • Ability to direct all levels of Aquatics at the YMCA. Including Staff development, monitoring of budgets, marketing and public relations, and program management.
  • Prefer knowledge of, and previous experience with Swimming, Aquatics management, and diverse populations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborations with community organizations.
  • YMCA Team leader or multi-team/Branch Leader certification preferred.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $30,000.00 - $35,000.00
