The YMCA of Greater Cleveland is seeking a Controller will lead our general accounting team and is responsible for planning and directing all accounting operational functions, including but not limited to, cash management, internal and external audit, and all regulatory and compliance reporting.
Under the leadership of the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller leads internal and external financial statement reporting and analysis, administration of the budget and support across the organization, and ensures timely and accurate financials in compliance with GAAP.
This role develops and administers approved accounting policies and procedures throughout the YMCA and works with business units to develop operating procedures and internal controls to strengthen the organization.
- Hires, trains, supervises and leads all accounting personnel and budgets, including accounts payable and receivable, payroll, grants management and general accounting areas.
- Maintains an administers accounting systems, security and controls to accomplish the proper recording and reporting of all operations, transactions, assets and liabilities of the YMCA supporting fund accounting.
- Serves as resource person to management and program personnel in all matters relating to accounts payable, accounts receivable, general accounting, and all variance and research of financials.
- Supervises and approves all journal entries and reconciliations of YMCA bank accounts and all other balance sheet accounts on a monthly basis. All reconciling items must be documented, researched and resolved.
- Prepares any financial statements required by management, the Board, and outside agencies.
- Maintains records, and prepares various internal and external reports, including reports for various federal and state agencies. Prepares the IRS Form 990 tax return for review by the CFO, CEO and board.
- Facilitates key functions such as annual independent audit. Develops and maintains key relationships, including but not limited to financial institutions and insurance companies.
- Coordinates and supervises operating cash flow management through accounts payable, accounts receivable, and various cash reserve requirements.
- Leads the administration of the annual budget process and support across the organization and ongoing monthly forecast process.
- Conducts special internal audits, accounting studies, analyses and cost studies as required and provides recommendations.
- Works closely with IT staff to ensure that computer and software systems provide accurate information and adequate internal controls.
- Identify, lead and execute a culture of continuous improvement to improve quality, profitability and customer satisfaction.
- CPA, MBA, Six Sigma Certification (Preferred).
Requirements
- Minimum five years’ experience in a supervisory accounting role.
- Sound knowledge GAAP, accounting principles, rules, regulations, policies, and best practices.
- Strong financial acumen and abilities in advanced math.
- High attention to details and strong organizational skills.
- Experience in a nonprofit environment is preferred.
- High proficient in Microsoft Excel with advanced abilities.
- Proven collaboration and communication skills across teams and organizational levels.
- Knowledge of banks, banking systems and cash management.
- Knowledge of and expertise with computerized accounting systems.
- Ability to develop and use spreadsheets and standard business software systems.
