The Stewardship Assistant will conduct various stewardship and ecological monitoring activities on The Nature Conservancy’s Pine Butte, Crown Butte and Blackleaf Preserves and may travel to other Montana preserves and/or properties to conduct similar duties. Primary responsibilities will include but not be limited to: prescribed fire operations; treating noxious weeds and monitoring control efforts; maintaining preserve equipment and facilities; assisting with the collection of ecological monitoring data, data entry, data management and providing information to preserve visitors.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Participate in prescribed fire operations, preparations and planning.
- Assist with the control of noxious weeds and monitoring of control efforts.
- Assist with livestock management.
- Maintain fences, trails, vehicles, equipment and structures.
- Assist with other resource management activities, including prairie restoration and forest management.
- Assist with research and collection of ecological monitoring data and computer data entry and management.
- Provide information to the public.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Help plan and direct work groups, including other staff or volunteers.
- Receives detailed instructions to complete required tasks.
- May work under close supervision or infrequent supervision.
Educational Background:
Undergraduate degree in environmental studies and demonstrated experience in agricultural land management and terrestrial invasive species control.
Skills/Experience:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to work independently with little supervision, following verbal or written instructions.
- Proven ability to live and work in an isolated rural environment.
- Experience safely handling herbicides, applying herbicides via pressurized spray units, and calibrating spray equipment for effective application over large areas of diverse terrain.
- Experience operating various types of agricultural equipment and tools including but not limited to ATV/UTV, tractor, herbicide spray equipment, large trailer towing, seeders.
- Experience recognizing Montana plant and animal species.
- Experience in biological population trend monitoring work associated with grazing and recreation management.
- Experience performing physical work outdoors in extreme weather conditions.
- Due to remote living conditions, reliable personal transportation is required.
- Experience in donor engagement.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 1 year training in science-related field or related experience in land management.
- Demonstrated ability to be a team member and commitment to the goals of The Nature Conservancy.
- Ability to convey work instructions to other management team members, including volunteers.
- Ability to interact with the public and to convey basic information, possibly leading preserve field trips.
- Ability to function productively as a member or leader of a work team.
- Computer experience with Windows and standard applications; GIS familiarity including Arcmap 10.1.1, GPS devices, and data management.
