The Wetland Restoration Manager will work as part of a team to develop and implement actions to achieve conservation goals associated with Audubon’s Great Lakes Initiative. S/he will directly oversee implementation of wetland and riparian restoration and protection projects within the Great Lakes’ region. S/he will coordinate with national and regional science, engagement, policy, and administrative staff, as well as Audubon chapters and members, and partners to ensure conservation projects and programs are holistic, inclusive, and sustainable.

Audubon’s Great Lakes Initiative has experienced rapid growth and early conservation successes since its launching in 2016. Program objectives focus on improving habitat for breeding and migratory birds, while improving water quality and building climate resiliency in and around the Great Lakes. The Wetland Restoration Manager will work to strengthen existing partnerships, while mobilizing restoration action on the ground. S/he will manage the implementation of a portfolio of projects funded by state and federal agencies, foundations and corporate and individual donors. Working with science, conservation, development, and leadership staff within Audubon, the Wetland Restoration Manager will play a key role in achieving Audubon’s ambitious conservation goals in the region.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Lead implementation of wetland restoration projects, collaborating with partners and executing habitat and hydrological field work led by staff and/or contractors.
  • Survey wetland hydrological conditions and oversee the design/engineering of hydrological restoration, including the implementation of water control structures.
  • Develop and manage grant and project budgets, quarterly billings, and financial reports in close coordination with finance and administrative staff.
  • Develop and manage contracts, grant (programmatic) reporting, and project implementation.
  • Communicate with funders to update progress on projects.
  • Supervise consultants and contractors.
  • Under supervision of Director of Conservation and in close coordination with Upper Mississippi and Atlantic Flyway leadership staff, identify, conceptualize and prioritize strategic wetland and riparian restoration projects.
  • Build relationships and partnerships with public and private land owners to advance protection goals in priority geographies.
  • Work with national and regional science staff and land owner partners to ensure effective communication around adaptive management.
  • Work with national and regional science, communication, and policy staff, as well as Audubon Chapters, Centers and other regional partners to communicate results of restoration and science projects.
  • Develop and facilitate workshops, meetings and calls with agency, non-profit and landowners to gather and disseminate information.
  • Identify and work with colleagues to secure additional funding resources to support Audubon’s Great Lakes Initiative.
  • Based on restoration projects and other related research, develop reports that analyze and interpret results, and present findings to managers, scientists, activists and the public.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in conservation biology, ecology or similar required, Master's degree preferred.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Five years of professional work in ecology or restoration and significant restoration experience in riparian, wetland, or estuarine habitats. Experience in bird conservation ecology is a plus.
  • Experience writing proposals and administering government grants, and partnering with government agencies.
  • Demonstrated experience managing people and projects, and comfort in directing contractors and consultants.
  • Deep knowledge and passion for the conservation of Great Lakes coastal ecosystems required. Deep knowledge of hemimarsh is desirable.
  • Ability to comprehend complex hydrological conditions and to conceptualize hydrological changes is desirable.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills and the ability to synthesize and communicate technical and complex information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a multi-faceted team.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, GIS and statistical analysis software.
  • Willingness to do field work under a wide variety of conditions.
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license and a willingness to travel throughout the Great Lakes Region is a must.
  • Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed.
