The Vice President, Financial Development and Deputy Director serves as a key leadership team member and leads strategic decision-making affecting fundraising and development activities at YMCA of the USA. The VP has primary responsibility for the YUSA financial development department and supervision of the team with individual accountability for the fundraising goal. S/he will establish and implement the performance and moves management processes underlying collective fundraising with the Movement and overall fundraising success. Builds the Financial Development infrastructure needed to create operational efficiency and effectiveness expanding Y-USA’s capacity to generate resources supporting the development and expansion of programs across the Movement.

In collaboration with the Chief Advancement Officer, designs and executes a multi-year plan for resourcing the Y-USA Strategic Plan and Commitment to America. This position leads and supervises a team of philanthropic and government fundraising professionals to deliver specific financial goals. This position directs Movement engagement that will result in creation of a Common Agenda for fundraising that will be used to rally a United Movement of YMCA Fundraisers and generate local resources in support of the Commitment to America.

This position leads the advancement of operational collaborations with the Accounting/Finance, Membership and Program, Marketing and Communications, and Government Relations departments to devise budgeting, tracking, forecasting and reporting systems to enable organizational management decisions about the right allocation of contributed revenue. While providing direct supervision to the Financial Development team, this position will align the department to enable relationship management that maximizes strong partnership between the development team, Y-USA Board, senior leadership, Membership and Program staff.

This position requires relocation to Chicago, IL.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Supervise the Financial Development Team in developing strategy and executing operational and multi-year fundraising goals
  • Execute the CAO developed and Board-endorsed 3-year Fundraising Plan in support of the Y-USA Strategic Plan
  • Lead strategy sessions in support of the national strategic goals and objectives of the department, including philanthropy, cause marketing, sponsorship, government revenue, Y-USA national initiatives and campaigns and all related development objectives
  • Create and manage a Donor Information team that successfully drives action on a pipeline for 7 and 8-figure philanthropic partnerships; create business processes that enable organizational management decisions about the acquisition and allocation of contributed revenue from multiple constituencies; including review by Brand Development Team and Brand Council coupled with local Y approval process for all corporate donors and prospective donors
  • Manage and develop a high performing Donor Relations team, ensuring that grant-writing, donor communications and donor stewardship are integrated to all stages of relationship management
  • Provide primary leadership to the budgeting, internal operations and communication functions for Financial Development
  • Analyze market trends and identify opportunities to increase Y-USA’s and the Movement’s ability to engage new and existing stakeholders that will drive donors and volunteers to local YMCAs
  • Serve as the Y-USA Representative to the NAYDO Council and develop opportunities for strategic alignment for Y-USA and the Movement; supervise the Y-USA/NAYDO staff liaison’s implementation of key initiatives
  • Collaborate with Talent, Knowledge and Management (TKM) team on development and implementation of training ecosystem and tools that are responsive to the Movement’s professional development needs
  • Develop the resources needed and direct a team responsible for the identification, tracking, and reporting of Financial Development metrics for Y-USA and the Movement
  • Engage with Y-USA leadership, as called upon, to ensure the Service Delivery Model supports the Movement’s Financial Development needs; supervise all Financial Development activities in support of the Service Delivery Model including LINK communities
  • Support Chief Advancement Officer’s staffing of national board’s committees, including Financial Development and act as second to the Chief Advancement Officer when travel creates conflict with other business commitments
  • Foster a culture of service, experimentation, collaboration and openness to change
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree is required. Master’s degree is preferred
Skills/Experience: 
  • Certified Fund-Raising Executive (CFRE) certification a plus
  • Must possess a minimum of 10 years of senior level experience leading successful operational efforts for a large matrix organization. Experience in both the private and nonprofit sectors is strongly preferred
  • Minimum 8-10 years supervisory experience
  • Demonstrated experience in development or related sales environment is required
  • Demonstrated experience supervising the design and implementation of financial development systems is required
  • Demonstrated experience with pipeline development in a fundraising or related sales environment is required
  • Demonstrated experience with the collection, analysis and application of development data to drive strategy is required; familiarity with current trends in measuring return is strongly preferred
  • Superior interpersonal, verbal/written communication and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relationship management processes and protocols is required
  • Demonstrated knowledge of CRM Platforms is required; knowledge of Raiser’s Edge a plus
  • Demonstrated successful track record leading internal and cross-functional teams in achieving desired outcomes as well as reconfiguring teams to meet emerging client needs
  • Must possess a well-honed understanding of sponsorship and the development of constituent groups
  • Must be based at YUSA headquarters in Chicago and able to travel when needed
