The Alzheimer's Association's National Office in Chicago seeks a Specialist, Media Engagement. They should be enthusiastic about working with the media and ready to jump into an inspiring and rewarding environment with the ability to craft project plans and execute media outreach on behalf of the Alzheimer's Association.  They support wide-ranging media relations campaigns and outreach efforts with a consumer and health focus including story mining, pitch development and active engagement with reporters for both traditional and online media and fulfilling reactive media needs. Additionally, they contribute to public relations plan development and execution, outreach strategies and integration across marketing communications channels, following and capitalizing on health, philanthropy and media trends, working with internal and external constituents and special projects to extend the reach of the Alzheimer's Association.

This position is based in the Association's Home Office in downtown Chicago, IL and reports to the Associate Director, Media Engagement.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Develops and executes media relations campaigns and outreach efforts using demonstrated superior research, writing and editorial skills.
  • Develops and cultivates good working relationships with reporters and media outlets.
  • Identifies media trends/interests, determines what "works" with top-tier media and applies this knowledge when in developing and executing effective traditional and online media strategies.
  • Prepares compelling media pitches, leveraging existing and emerging Association assets, to secure editorial placements with  various media targets (top-tier national print/broadcast media, online, trade,  radio, blogs, etc.).
  • Develops messaging and talking points and provides communications counsel to Association spokespersons in preparation for media interviews.
  • Identifies "emerging/breaking' news opportunities and works proactively to position the Alzheimer's Association optimally within these opportunities
  • Coordinates department long-lead editorial calendar.
  • Creates customizable PR collateral materials for use in chapter PR/media outreach efforts.
  • Assists with vetting incoming celebrity/entertainment requests regarding Association partnership.
  • Manages multiple projects in a timely and effective manner.
  • Collaborates with internal and external partners to effectively create awareness about Alzheimer's.
  • Coordinates with outside agencies on specific projects as needed
  • Provides guidance and support to the full organizational network, including local offices.
  • Other projects as assigned.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism or related field
Skills/Experience: 
  • 3-5 years related, progressive  professional experience; agency or VHA experience preferred
  • Strong writing skills and knowledge of AP Style are essential
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite required
  • Experience working with media
  • Strong working knowledge of social media channels and tactics
  • Highly organized, self-motivated individual able to work with minimal supervision
  • Excellent communication skills to build positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders, and foster collaborative team orientation
  • Effective public speaking and presentation skills desired
  • Experience managing outside vendors or agencies desired
  • Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed for the job
  • Ability and willingness to travel domestically by car and air  up to 10%
