The Specialist, Healthy Living Public Policy supports the YMCA of the USA's (YUSA) Healthy Living partnership and policy portfolio. This position will assist with an assigned portfolio of healthy living issues as determined by supervisor and the YUSA Legislative Agenda. This position will work with Executive Branch officials to position the YMCA movement and promote our legislative agenda; this will include working in assigned coalitions regarding YMCA of the USA's healthy living national legislative agenda. This position will also support YMCA State Alliances in their statewide efforts to raise awareness and promote Healthy Living work in their states. This position may also be tasked with very limited work on Social Responsibility issues that may impact Y’s community service. 

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Works with guidance and coordination of the federal agenda under direct supervision by the Vice President, Health Partnerships and Policy to further YUSA’s impact and influence within the public policy arena and will further influence healthy living issues externally and internally
  • Supports and collaborates with department colleagues to support the entire legislative effort and department strategy
  • Assists Vice President in tracking and measuring how government support benefits the YUSA and its members
  • Participates and presents feedback to Vice President for assigned coalition meetings that help advance YUSA’s healthy living priorities
  • Assists Vice President in researching and preparing presentations and speeches to assigned audiences on healthy living public policy issues
  • Supports department to ensure successful annual advocacy days
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree required, Public Policy or similar concentration is preferred
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum 3-4 years of work experience on Capitol Hill and/or working within the policy/political community in Washington, DC. This may include a combination of Hill experience, Executive Branch experience and nonprofit/association experience
  • Experience working with national coalitions is preferred
  • Ability to travel 10% of the time is required
  • Knowledge of public policy issues and a basic understanding of federal agencies and coalitions involved with Healthy Living issues is required
  • Knowledge of federated organizational structures is required
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication and presentation skills are required
  • Excellent research and analytical skills are required
  • Intermediate computer skills and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) are required
  • Advanced ability to multi-task, be flexible, prioritize and meet deadlines is required
  • Ability to work in teams and collaborate with others is required
  • Ability to influence others to achieve objectives is required
  • Ability to interact with tact and professionalism within all levels of an organization as well as with external audiences is required
  • Commitment to the YMCA character development values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility is required
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $72,000.00 - $82,000.00
