We are seeking a Manager, Licensure and Certification (M, LC) to manage corps member onboarding and support as it pertains to teacher licensure, certification, and test preparation in our region. The M,LC will support the Managing Director, Partnerships and Onboarding in managing risk regarding licensure at the corps member/teacher level while also managing risk and setting strategy to ensure we are able to consistently place a growing number of corps member in high needs subject areas across Illinois and Indiana. Effective leadership in this role will enable a diverse and certified corps ready to teach on the first day of school, healthy relationships with our certifying university partners, and long term strategy and risk management for licensure in Chicago and Northwest Indiana. The manager will report directly to the Managing Director, Partnerships and Onboarding.   

Areas of Responsibility: 

Corps Member/Alumni Teacher Licensure and Certification (60%) 
Set Vision for Licensure

  • Draft and manage toward a long-term vision for teacher licensure for corps members and alumni in both Indiana and Illinois responsive to state alternative licensure laws
  • Co-manage and leverage our relationships with Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and Indiana Department of Education (IDOE), along with the MD, Partnerships & Onboarding, to influence equitable alternative certification licensure policies

Manage Licensure Requirements during Onboarding (Certification Exams)

  • Manage corps members toward licensure deadlines throughout the onboarding process by creating and managing systems for effective tracking and follow-up
  • Ensure corps members are prepared for certification testing through organizing test preparation opportunities and managing testing communication, including but not limited to, support for any incoming teacher not exempt from the basic skills exam
  • Ensure licensure strategy is designed and executed in a way that fosters and promotes a strong corps culture and experience
  • Work collaboratively with the Director, Alumni Teacher Leadership to support licensure support with alumni teachers moving to the region

Lead Licensure Entitlement Process

  • Partner with certifying university partners to ensure 100% of our corps members are certified and entitled with their credentials by the first day of school

Serve as Liaison to University Partners

  • Manage and set corps member facing communication strategy regarding licensure and University Partners admissions requirements (test prep, testing, tuition, transcript policies, etc)
  • Steward our relationship with the admissions teams at certifying university partners and manage our corps members toward university partner enrollment and academic standing expectations
  • Coordinate the application/admissions process for teachers and university partners, serving as primary contact for all non-program related inquiries from University Partners
  • Participate in quarterly meetings with graduate school partners to review licensure compliance

Admission and Confirmation Support (25%)

  • Collaboratively set vision and direction, along with Director, Matriculation & Onboarding, on cross-team and cross-functional projects involving teacher licensure and support including, but not limited to, determining what subjects our accepted applicants can legally teach in the states of Illinois and Indiana (also known as assignment smoothing),  supporting completion of the alternative licensure requirements, etc.)
  • Collaborate with the TFA national admissions team to lead regional assignment smoothing (process by which we use transcripts to determine content areas that teachers can teach) to ensure we are meeting our goals around high need subject areas while also troubleshooting confirm-declines from other regions seeking reassignment in Chicago/NWI
  • Support the D, Matriculation & Onboarding on confirmation/retention strategies affected by alternative certification licensure laws in Illinois and NWI
  • Track and report data trends in teacher confirmation rates and subject area to the MD, Partnerships & Onboarding.

Team responsibilities (5%)

  • Prepare for and lead check ins with your manager around progress toward your goals and your ongoing development
  • Prepare for and participate in Corps Member Leadership team meetings
  • Collaborate with and support your colleagues’ work and development

  • Make a direct impact on the organizational mission of enlisting, developing and mobilizing leaders to strengthen the movement for educational equity by participating in selection (6-10 days total plus preparation and close out time), matriculation (up to six windows across the year), regional recruitment activity, member facing events (including Leadership Summits and Summer Training), our alumni giving campaign, alumni survey, and at least one regional or national committee/working group, and other initiatives that impact our members and partners
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree required
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum of 3 years work experience required
  • Experience supporting licensure and certification processes for educators, preferred but not required
  • Experience working with and navigating complex systems, including those of educational institutions and/or government agencies
  • Experience managing and tracking large amounts of information and providing individualized support based on identified needs

Building Relationships and Influencing Others

  • Builds and sustains partnerships with complex organizations, including university partners and state agencies, in order to support the certification and licensure of corps members and alumni educators
  • Leverage and cultivate relationships with members as a means of adequately supporting their completion of graduate degree programs and fulfill licensure and certification requirements.
  • Able to articulate technical information related to licensure and certification and individual member standing, verbally and in writing, to ensure members are on track to completing certification requirements.
  • Designs and leverages communications systems for the purposes of disseminating technical information, program requirements, and providing timely updates to corps members

Operating and Managing

  • Ability to organize, plan, and manage complex logistics involving multiple stakeholders
  • Ability to maintain up-to-date member standing data and monitor progress toward collective deadlines and licensure milestones
  • Ability to execute against stated program timelines and objectives

Reasoning and Strategic Thinking

  • Ability to gather and analyze data in order to monitor program outcomes and to inform or adjust strategy related to advancing regional strategic priorities

Work Demands

  • Occasional evening and weekend work is required
  • Ability to travel throughout the Chicago-Northwest Indiana area to attend in person meetings with alumni and system/school leaders
  • Limited overnight travel required to attend Teach For America conferences (expenses paid for by Teach For America)
