The Executive Vice President & General Counsel provides guidance and ensures legal compliance with respect to governance functions of YMCA of the USA, works closely with Executive Branch team, CEO, CFO, Board Members and other volunteers, and maintains corporate documents and records.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Work with Chief Executive Officer to develop long-range plans to ensure the compliance of the organization with established governance and statutory standards
  • Assist with highly complex and sensitive issues relating to national partnerships, philanthropic endeavors, human resources and other business management matters
  • Oversee the evaluation of contracts and respond to calls from consultants and member associations.
  • Monitor and protect intellectual property of YMCA of the USA.
  • Form relationships with network of not-for-profit executives to position YMCA of the USA and promote services to member associations.
  • Work with Government Relations & Policy, Certification & Membership Standards, and consulting groups to strengthen member associations.
  • Create and promote a positive and supportive, inclusive work environment.
  • Support the CEO and Board of Directors with respect to effective board governance.
  • Supervise and develop a team of attorneys and paralegals.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
Juris doctorate required.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Illinois licensure required.
  • Minimum 7 years of demonstrated senior level legal experience preferred.
  • Minimum 12-15 years legal experience desired, with strong background in not-for-profit law, governance and tax law.
  • Minimum 5 years supervisory experience preferably in a legal environment.
  • Solid background in intellectual property law.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills essential.
  • Presentation skills and ability to represent the YMCA in a public forum are required.
  • Commitment to character development values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $275,000.00 - $310,000.00
