The Cook assists in daily kitchen operations which includes, but is not limited to, food preparation, stocking food items, cleaning and maintenance.This position is located at our Hay Boys Campus-1140 W. Jackson Blvd. Chicago, IL 60607.

The schedule for this position is: Monday through Thursday 2:30pm-6:30pm, must be flexible to work different shifts. 

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Experience in food service.
  • Current sanitation certification from the Chicago Department of Public Health and compliance with state, local, and regulatory agencies in relation to food service.
  • Experience cooking for a large number of people. 
  • Ability to safely use all food service equipment.
  • Ability to maintain kitchen sanitation and safety standards.
  • Regular and predictable attendance
  • Ability to work both independently and as an active team member.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Maturity and sensitivity to cultural and individual differences.
  • Ability to maintain professional demeanor while exercising judgment and discretion in work.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, recipes, menus, warning labels, packing slips and supply orders.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time, bend and reach.
  • Flexibility in scheduling and willingness to cover other shifts.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Prepare nutritious meals for Youth and Staff while complying with all applicable sanitation, health and personal hygiene standards as well as department policy and procedure.
  • Follow set menus and recipes while also being creative to use food items on hand and minimize waste.
  • Maintain cleanliness of kitchen, dining room, stock rooms and adjoining areas.
  • Organize and stock kitchen and supply room.
  • Work cooperatively and professionally with all Agency staff.
  • Assist with set-up, service and clean-up of food production.
  • Use, clean and store kitchen equipment properly and following all protocol and procedure.
  • Assist with safety and training procedures in handling of food service equipment.
  • Complete tasks assigned by the Manager- Foodservice Operations.
  • Cooperate in the scheduled cleaning of specific areas.
  • Serve all youth and staff with respect and in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with Career Resources team on meeting the needs of the Youth Employees.
